UB College Advisor

Job Summary:

The college advisor serves as academic advisor to high school students enrolled in the Upward Bound program, with responsibility for advising them; regarding academic choices, monitoring student performance, and progress towards successful completion of high school. The college advisor will provide college and career advising to Upward Bound students including A-G class programming, SAT/ACT registration, developing Individual Learning Plans, and chaperoning college tours. Prepares quarterly reports on each student, describing counseling activities for the reporting period and providing specific details regarding student progress such as course schedule, grades, and related matters. Participates in recruitment of new students by reviewing records, interviewing students, and recommends final selections. The college advisor represents the University of San Francisco Upward Bound Project and develops effective working relationships with staff, parents, and key stakeholders within the target schools. Collaborates with school staff and community organizations to identify barriers to learning and provide solutions and support systems that will enable Upward Bound students' success. The college advisor will mainly work at Oakland High School during the academic year.

Full Job Description:

  • Provide individual and group college and career advising, workshops, and presentations
  • Supervise the college admission process and coordinate college visits
  • Serve as College/Career Advisor for the six-week Summer Component
  • Outreach and recruitment of students
  • Individual Learning Plans (ILP) and Transcript evaluations
  • Assist with exam registration
  • Track report cards and academic progress
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Attend college and career collaborative meetings at target schools
  • Outreach to community organizations to plan cultural and educational activities
  • Plans and organizes periodic group meetings for all program students.
  • Maintains close liaison with students, their families and high school staff
  • Data entry
  • Support students in college and career centers at target schools
  • Track, attend, and connect students to tutoring services
  • Advice & assistance in secondary course selection, and if applicable, initial postsecondary course selection
  • Participate and support College/Career events at target schools
  • Attend Parent Nights, Back-to-School Night, Cash for College, and other College/Career events in the evenings at target schools
  • Drive students to/from workshops, field trips, and college tours
  • Must be present at tutoring sessions
  • Student outreach - including but not limited to personal calls, emails, texts, home visits etc.
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Education, English, Psychology, Social Science, or Math
  • 3 years of experience in student services professional work with low-income, first generation minority students; experience with state and federal programs; Prefer person from similar background as target population.
  • At least one year of working with a college-access program or college/career exploration
  • Life experience with barriers similar to those from TRIO target populations, including, but not limited to, being a member of an underrepresented group in higher education, being a first-generation student, being from a low income family, or having a disability.

Additional skills, knowledge, & abilities needed for position:

  • Knowledge of issues affecting the academic potential of low income, first generation college-bound youth (bilingual a plus)
  • Ability to express effectively both written and oral communications. Ability to effectively present information on one-on-one and small group situation
  • Working knowledge of personnel and instructional computing applications required
  • Extensive experience working with teenagers in multi-racial environment, in guidance counseling, community work or social agency
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours
  • Some administrative and supervisory experience
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and clean driving record
