Job Summary

The TTI Associate Research Scientist is responsible for conducting applied research on transportation planning including extreme event (resilience planning) and/or freight planning. Serves as Principal Investigator (PI) and leads research and proposal development. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Essential Duties

  • Serves as a principal investigator (PI) on projects and is expected to pursue and secure externally funded research and to work within collaborative teams on projects led by other PI’s. (30%).

  • Prepares technical documents including formal project reports and scientific papers (30%).

  • Performs research on externally funded research projects, and develops research proposals for national, state, local, and private sponsors. Designs and executes research projects throughout the research cycle including proposal writing, literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, and reporting (30%).

  • Provides oversight and direction to student employees and junior staff. Execute oversight and leadership of self-initiated research projects, author or co-author of reports and scholarly publications based on original research. Assist with the overall direction and management, which includes the day-to-day supervision, planning, administration, evaluation, and implementation of the division/program's research functions.  (5%)

  • Helps develop division-wide work processes (4%).

  • Performs other duties as assigned (1%)

Required Education & Experience

  • Master's Degree.

  • Five (5) years of related professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Civil / Transportation Engineering or related subject area.

  • 3 years of related work experience

  • Programming skills – proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: R, Python, C++, C#. Willingness to learn Python.

  • Advanced GIS skills.

  • Transportation modeling/traffic engineering.

  • Knowledge of OpenStreetMap and routing algorithms.

  • A Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of data analytics, modeling, and statistical analysis.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • Ability to work independently, but collaboratively.
