Job Description

Job Summary:

The successful applicant will conduct applied research in transportation emissions, energy and health as part of the Center for Advancing Research in Transportation Emissions, Energy and Health (CARTEEH). This position requires a disciplined, applied research scientist or engineer to investigate the effects of transportation emissions. Ideally, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate subject level expertise in one or more of these areas through a history of completed projects, scientific publications, or invited conference presentations. However, applications from researchers with demonstrably exceptional basic research skills (writing, quantitative analysis), and an interest in the subject area are also encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will perform research on externally funded research projects, and develop research proposals for national, state, local and private sponsors. The successful applicant is expected to serve as a Principal Investigator on externally funded research projects but will also be expected to work within collaborative teams on projects led by other Principal Investigators.

Essential Duties:

  • Actively seek and obtain externally funded research projects by participating in research proposals serving as Principal Investigator (PI), or Co-PI (5%)

  • Prepares technical documents including formal project reports and scientific papers (45%).

  • Design and execute research projects throughout the research cycle including proposal writing, literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, reporting (40%).

  • Provide oversight and direction to student employees and junior staff (5%)

  • Help develop division wide work processes (4%).

  • Other duties as assigned (1%)

Required Education & Experience:

  • Master's Degree

  • 3 years of related work experience

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

  • Data analytics and statistical analysis

  • Transportation modeling and analysis

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

  • Ability to work independently, but collaboratively

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Work strategically with oversight from a Program Manager or senior staff


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, or Transportation Engineering or Sciences

  • Experience with Data visualization

  • Experience with Emissions modeling

  • Experience with Traffic engineering

  • Programming skills – proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: R, Python, C++, C#.

  • Web Technology and Architecture – proficiency in designing and deploying web-based technology, e.g., Microsoft Internet Information Server, Apache / PhP server. Experience with Amazon Web Services is also preferable.
