Job Summary:
Utilize Finite Element and other advanced pavement and soils analysis programs to solve highway infrastructure problems; process, analyze, and interpret lab test data; perform different pavement materials tests (i.e. dynamic resilient modulus, wheel rutting etc.) on subgrade soils, base and asphalt materials; and manage accelerated pavement test pad construction, sample materials, data analysis and report writing.
Utilize experience in solving complex problems related to pavement and materials; using simple and sophisticated equipment; assessing the performance of pavement and materials designs in the field; testing pavement materials mixtures to characterize resistance to cracking, rutting, skid resistance, moisture damage, and bonding in the laboratory; characterizing soils subgrades, untreated and treated base, aggregates, binders, cement, asphalt concrete, polylevel, and concrete; drafting project reports for the project supervisor’s review and approval to submit same to respective clients; and developing research proposals.
Essential Duties:
Conduct research activities including field survey, data collection and analysis, laboratory testing and analysis and other related activities; Assess new and complex materials introduced in the field of pavement (i.e. Durable Green Colored Pavement Materials for Bike Lanes, Polylevel, and Ultra-thin Slurry Overlays). 20%
Actively seek and obtain externally-funded research projects working on basic and applied technology problems, and participate in preparing research proposals. 12%
Serve as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, and/or contribute subject expertise as a significant lead in the proposal. 25%
Interact with sponsors and potential clients. 10%
Prepare project reports and other correspondence. 10%
Prepare and deliver presentations in conferences and other decided meetings. 5%
Run Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and interpret results; collect Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data; perform back calculation and run pavement designs. 5%
Develop real time teaching materials and teach training school (including DOT personnel) on different aspects of pavement engineering. 10%
Other duties as assigned. 3%
Requirements :
Master’s degree in Pavement Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field plus 3 years’ experience in job offered or 3 years’ experience in related occupation solving complex problems related to pavement and materials; using simple and sophisticated equipment; assessing the performance of pavement and materials designs in the field; testing pavement materials mixtures to characterize resistance to cracking, rutting, skid resistance, moisture damage, and bonding in the laboratory; characterizing soils subgrades, untreated and treated base, aggregates, binders, cement, asphalt concrete, polylevel, and concrete; drafting project reports for the project supervisor’s review and approval to submit same to respective clients; and developing research proposals. Requires 20% travel. Requires ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
