Job Summary
Installs, maintains and repairs physical transport and/or wide area network equipment. Analyzes existing networks and equipment and identifies opportunities for improvement. Identifies, analyzes, and repairs product failures, orders and replaces parts as needed. Determines and recommends which products or services best fit the customers’ needs. Develops solutions that meet business requirements. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department.
UEN Specific Summary: Responsible for statewide provisioning and troubleshooting and repair of existing transport equipment for the Utah Education Network (UEN). A sound working knowledge of ROADM, DWDM, SONET, Cisco router/switch configuration and support is essential. Familiarity with large heterogeneous wide area networks and a demonstrated knowledge of networking circuits to include; gigabit Ethernet, metro Ethernet, OC-3, DS-3 and DS-1, plus experience with TCP/IP, OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, and supporting network applications, is required.
Responsibilities
• Selected candidates will be responsible for statewide provisioning and troubleshooting and repair of existing transport equipment.
• May be involved with the commissioning/test & turn up of new equipment, including, but not limited to DWDM Mux Equipment, Cisco routers and switches, proper placement of copper and fiber as well as their termination.
• May install and maintains DS-1, DS3, OC-3, Gigabit Ethernet, short haul/wireless and fiber optic transport systems.
• May require work that can be strenuous to include communication site improvements, including building cabling and equipment installation.
• May require statewide travel and evening and weekend work as necessary.
• May supervise the work of others.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree in area of specialty or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Qualification may vary depending on department utilizing position.
