Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Technology Shop Technician provides assistance to the Technology Shop for day to day operations of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (The Clarice). The Technology Shop Technician is responsible for assisting in the execution of events as assigned. The Technology Shop Technician supervises volunteers, paid/unpaid student personnel, as well as, casual labor crew. The Technology Shop Technician also provides instruction and training in lighting, audio, projection and streaming systems (multimedia) to students.
The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is an integrated arts laboratory where artists, arts scholars and arts administrators collaborate to spark inspiration and build the future of the arts. As an intellectually curious and socially conscious community, we leverage creativity, scholarship, innovation and community engagement across the arts to foster expression, generate curiosity and inspire a greater good. The Clarice is part of the performing arts at Maryland community, which also includes the School of Music, the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library and Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION
Bachelors degree in Multimedia Technology or related field.
EXPERIENCE
One year in the operation and maintenance of audio-visual or multimedia equipment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of multimedia equipment; of basic media systems and facilities design. 
  • Skill in the operation and repair of multimedia equipment. 
  • Ability to lead and train subordinate personnel; to use personal computers; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to work over, under and around fixed equipment; to work in confined spaces; to lift and carry multimedia equipment.

OTHER:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

PREFERENCES:
  • Working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of audio, lighting, or projection-related equipment.
  • Ability to operate audio, lighting, and projection-related equipment; to use electronic testing, hand and power tools; to perform extensive standing and walking; to lift and carry lighting and testing equipment; to use personal computers.
  • Thorough knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of management and supervision.
  • Skill in planning and coordinating work; in interpreting and applying departmental policies and procedures; in operating manual and automated equipment including personal computers and related software.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate and train assigned staff; to negotiate resolution to scheduling and procedural problems; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Able to lift 50lbs and move equipment related to the streaming, audio, lighting, and projections field.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of lighting, audio, or/multimedia equipment and related systems.
  • Experience programming and working with ETC software based lighting consoles or Yamaha Audio Consoles.
  • Experience working in an educational setting.
  • Working knowledge of Yamaha audio consoles, amplifiers, speakers, Vectorworks, Lightwright, Isadora, Watchout, Qlab, Dante and show control networks.
  • Crowd Control Manager training.
  • CPR, AED, and first aid training.

Physical Demands
- Must be able to work from ladders, man lifts and scaffolding; to work from catwalk heights of 60’.
- Must be able to work while standing for long periods.
- Must be able to lift and manipulate objects up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to manipulate equipment, tools, supplies and/or exert force up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in hazardous environments, confined spaces, and to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
