Position Summary
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the oversight and management of construction projects for Washington University’s Danforth campus. This position collaborates with and advises team members and stakeholders in Capital Projects and Facilities Planning & Management (FPM), contractors, and other members of the Danforth campus community regarding design and construction for Washington University.
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of consultants performing design development through construction documents, incorporating Washington University Standards and Construction Standards.
This position interfaces with and advises departments and central administration regarding design and construction issues for Danforth Campus. This position also falls under the category of an Owner’s-Representative model of construction management. Finally, it is important to note that this position is a full-fledged, integral member of the Facilities Planning and Management team. All decisions made by the Senior Project Manager should take this into consideration to make sure the department is fully aligned in all aspects of a project.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversees the capital design of mid to large-sized construction projects on and off campus from inception to completion with an emphasis on quality, budget, and schedule. ·
  • Creates project objectives and work scope.
  • Implements project execution, construction management plans and procedures, and communication and risk mitigation plans.
  • Develops project reports to keep all relevant parties informed on status of schedule and cost elements of project.
  • Coordinates planning and design, determines estimates, schedules workflow of construction services and systems, and monitors construction of the project to ensure its delivery in accordance with contracts and university requirements and standards.
  • Provides consulting and problem-solving support to FPM.
  • Provides direction to Architects and Project Managers, identifying and resolving any potential issues.
  • Monitors quality control of projects.
  • Achieves FPM Capital Projects objectives by contributing information and recommendations to current and long-term strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; identifying trends; determining system improvements; implementing change.
  • Provides support, oversight, and policy direction for the utility infrastructure planning. Acts as key contact and subject matter expert for the local utility providers related to the medical campus's local utility infrastructure. Responsible for the short and long-term utility and civil/structural infrastructure, planning, management, and strategic vision for Danforth, including capital planning for all utilities, energy management systems, building envelope, civil and building infrastructure projects, capital renewal, and preventive maintenance planning of these systems. Assists in the review of renovation and new construction documents. Provides input in the maintenance of design standards/guidelines.
  • Upholds safety standards and inspects projects for safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This role has the option to work a hybrid schedule of three days in the office, two days working remotely.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree - Masters or Doctoral degree with a focus on building science/sustainability/architecture/engineering.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE and green building related guidelines and standards, including the WELL rating system and the Living Building Challenge. Previous experience managing the LEED certification administration process for a project(s).
  • Working knowledge of building codes.
  • Experience with building commissioning preferred.
  • Experience facilitating meetings and teams towards common goals.
  • Process management skills and experience preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Experience working with and motivating design professionals and contractors.
  • Self-motivated, responsible, mature and articulate.
  • Outstanding communication skills.
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, scheduling, project management and LEED Online experience.
  • Ability to organize time and priorities to be most productive.
  • Working knowledge of the design and construction industry, with a focus on sustainability, to assess quality of the work being performed.
  • Ability to make judgments on acceptability, proper means and methods of design and construction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior level managers and a variety of key stakeholders in the public, non-profit and private sectors.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with building mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, engineering, or related field from an accredited 4-year college or university.
  • Six years of experience.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary Range
$94,100.00 - $165,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
