Position Summary

SDSU Facilities Services is a customer service based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university.  Facilities Services employs over 235 employees (full-time and students) and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land with an operating budget of approximately forty-five million dollars.

The Supervising Painter is responsible for scheduling the work of the Paint Shop, making individual/crew work assignments, and supervising skilled journey-level painters, semi-skilled workers, and student assistants in the performance of painting and finish work. The Supervising Painter provides oversight for daily work assignments which include monitoring work in progress, inspection of completed work for compliance with specifications in addition to performing the full range of skilled painter work.  The Supervising Painter provides on the job training in trade and safety practices and ensures safety training and tailgate are completed on time.

The Supervising Painter provides a thorough and accurate accounting of time and materials; completes routine assignments; maintains equipment and a safe/clean working environment. This position is expected to consistently meet university needs in a timely and professional manner with increasingly improved skill. 

Must be able to effectively communicate and successfully interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization. Ability to maintain confidentiality and work appropriately within the department hierarchy. Communicates effectively to resolve problems and proactively resolve conflicts or disagreements in the workplace, makes suggestions and asks pertinent questions to facilitate effective communication.

Must be able to perform strenuous physical work while using mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. Ability to implement safety procedures, resolve problems and improve safety in the workplace. Works to instill in others the importance of workplace safety rules and regulations and takes appropriate actions. Ability to conduct hazard assessments, address hazards appropriately and apply controls as appropriate to address/mitigate hazards; promptly follow-up on health and safety risks, taking appropriate action(s), and provides necessary reports and documentation.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter’s apprenticeship program. Abilities of the Supervising Painter normally would be acquired through two or more years of experience as a journey-level painter, including one to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of lead or supervisory experience in the painting trade
  • Five years of work experience as a journey-level painter
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system
  • Two years or more of progressively more responsible work experience in a large, complex facilities management organization with a wide range of facility types, sizes, and ages. (Preferred settings include military, university, and municipality.)

Specialized Skills 

  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations and recognize, secure and report unsafe conditions immediately. 
  • Knowledge of safe working techniques and safety equipment and must be aware of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered (biohazards, chemicals, asbestos/lead containing material.
  • Ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures. 
  • Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the painting trade including painting, finishing, drywall, and paperhanging
  • Thorough knowledge of the applicable state codes and regulations, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.
  • Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques and a working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to construction projects.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,603 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,034 - $7,651 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
