Student Success Coordinator - The Black InGenius Initiative

This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of May 1, 2025, with the possibility of extension.

The University of San Diego's Black InGenious Initiative (BiGI) is designed to counterbalance the long-standing education inequities experienced by Black youth in the San Diego region. Additionally, BiGI welcomes non-Black youth from groups with documented experience of disparate and adverse impact on educational opportunity. Participation in BiGI and our related partner programs is extended to students from backgrounds such as socioeconomically disadvantaged, unsheltered, foster youth, transgendered, neurodiverse, undocumented, English language learner, first-gen to college, and/or from racial and ethnographic backgrounds with adverse disproportionate rates of suspensions, chronic absenteeism, gifted program enrollment, high school graduation, college matriculation, and law enforcement and special education referrals. BiGI will admit each year a new rising 6th grade cohort and support them through 12th-grade to successfully graduate from high school and be accepted at the University of San Diego or anywhere they choose to go to university. BiGI scholars, their guardians, and their educators will learn how to plan their college and career pathways through summer and Saturday programs.

The Student Success Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of The Black InGenius Initiative within SOLES. This position requires an individual who is passionate about student development, equity, and inclusion. The coordinator will be responsible for implementing strategies to enhance student engagement, academic success, and overall student experience within the BiGI project. This role demands a proactive approach to student needs, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Engagement and Support:

  • Develop and implement student engagement strategies, provide academic and personal support to students, and create an inclusive environment that fosters student success.

Training:

  • Organize and conduct training sessions for POD leaders who facilitate Saturday workshops. These training sessions should focus on equipping POD leaders with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to effectively lead and engage students during these workshops. The coordinator will also monitor the progress and effectiveness of these POD leaders, providing ongoing support and guidance to ensure the success of the Saturday workshops.

Curriculum Development:

  • This role involves the development and enhancement of educational content tailored to the Black Ingenious Initiative, focusing on programs such as the Summer Academy, biweekly Saturday workshops, and college tours. The candidate must be proficient in curriculum design, emphasizing inclusivity, innovation, and addressing the educational needs of our underrepresented students. Responsibilities include creating neurodiversity-supportive and socially just curricula, utilizing research-based practices. The role demands effective collaboration with the BiGI team at the University of San Diego to align curricula with the initiative's mission of promoting social justice in diverse educational settings.

Program Coordination Assistance:

  • Collaborate with the BiGI team to organize and coordinate student-focused events and workshops. Manage student communications and provide updates on program activities.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Track student participation and progress, maintain accurate student records, and contribute to the preparation of reports on student outcomes and program effectiveness.

Liaison and Networking:

  • Act as a liaison between students, faculty, and community stakeholders. Facilitate connections and networking opportunities for students within and beyond the university.

Feedback and Improvement:

  • Collect and analyze student feedback to continuously improve the effectiveness of student support services.

Provide one-on-one and group support to students, addressing their academic and personal needs.

Conducting on-site visits to schools to provide assistance and ensure the success of students.

Organize and coordinate student events, Saturday workshops, and meetings.

Maintain and update student records, ensuring confidentiality and accuracy.

Collaborate with other staff members and departments to enhance student services. 

Participate in the development and implementation of student success strategies.

Act as a point of contact for student inquiries and concerns, providing guidance and referrals as needed.

Engage in continuous professional development related to student success and equity.
