Job Summary

The OHST will assist the department of Radiological and Environmental Management(REM), a division of Public Safety, with various health and safety programs on campus.  The OHST will be trained to maintain specific EPA, OSHA, and fire safety program(s).  While open to all students, graduate assistants will be encouraged to perform training as needed.  The position is for 12-16 hours/week.

 


Duties and Responsibilities

Hazard Communication (HazCom) Program

  • Retrieve and distribute Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
  • Maintain the campus SDS master file
  • Perform annual departmental audits
  • Perform annual departmental updates
  • Assist departments as needed
  • Provide training on the Haz Com program to staff.

 

Fire Extinguisher Inspection Program

  • Perform monthly inspections of the 400+ fire extinguishers on campus.  This includes visually inspecting each fire extinguisher, documentation, and work with an outside vendor to make repairs.

 

May also assist with the following programs

  • Personal protective program
  • Chemical hygiene plan
  • Confined space program
  • Ergonomic assessments
  • Safety/eyewash shower inspections
  • Fume hood testing
  • Coordinate assorted fire system repairs/maintenance
  • Hazardous materials collection (OSHA training required)
  • Monthly fire extinguisher maintenance
  • Assist contractors with repairs/maintenance
  • Assist with some clerical duties
  • Assist with expanding the web site.

Education
  • PNW Student

Experience
  • Applicants must be a student at Purdue University Northwest-Hammond
  • Having a safety background is a plus, or currently working on an OLS-EHS major
  • While based on the Hammond campus, the technician may be called upon to occasionally travel to the Westville campus, time and mileage will be compensated
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, EXCEL, and ability to conduct research and retrieve applicable information from the Internet
  • The OHST will arrange for and meet with staff from other departments
  • Good interpersonal skills. Must be dependable and capable of working with minimal supervision
  • This position requires the OHST to go into non-ADA accessible areas and occasionally lift up to 40 lbs.
  • A valid driver’s license and transportation are needed.
