Using the unique scientific tools and intellectual resources of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), the Office of Educational Programs prepares the next generation of scientists, engineers, technicians, and educators. Our team comprises scientists, science educators, and engineers to develop and facilitate workforce development and education initiatives that support the scientific mission of BNL and the U.S. Department of Energy.

BNL provides opportunities to drive excitement for K-12 students and educators in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by exploring BNL's research initiatives.

We are seeking a Student Assistant to assist lead instructor(s) for the Office of Educational Programs STEM Summer programs such as, but not limited to, STEM Prep Summer Institute, Rising STEM Scholars, and Summer Science Explorations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support lead instructor with facilitation as needed.
  • Support lead instructor in program preparation as needed.
  • Enforce BNL safety regulations and program expectations.
  • Assist in program development as needed.
  • Support students and lead instructor in program deliverables.
  • Chaperone during on-site and/or off-site activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be an upper-level college (rising Junior or Senior) or graduate-level student enrolled in a STEM or STEM education program.
  • Collaborative and committed to working in diverse and inclusive group settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient with coding in a computer language (preferably Python).
  • Previous experience with teaching or classroom support in a formal or informal learning environment.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish preferred).

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Outdoor field trip considerations (sun, heat, ticks), Personal Protective Equipment worn during laboratory activities (some online training courses are required before the program starts).

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • The STEM Summer Teaching Assistant will be required to attend the program orientation and organizational meetings as scheduled.
  • This position is on-site. However, some of the programs may be remote.
  • Targeted start date is 7/1/24 and an end date of 8/9/24.
  • Full-time schedule of 40 hours per week (Monday - Friday).
