Position Summary
Assists in developing, conducting, and reporting research projects, including experimental design, data analysis and documentation of experimental results. Works with a laboratory team focused on bacterial pathogenesis and sex differences in host response to infection, using techniques spanning microbiology, immunology, cell biology, and biochemistry.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Following instructions and discussions with principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing and optimizing procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.
  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretive reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
  • Conducts literature searches related to research projects.
  • Prepares and submits papers based on research work to relevant biomedical journals and scientific meetings; gives oral presentations of work to peers and on-campus conferences.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Solves practical problems in the laboratory and provides advice to graduate students and technicians on their projects. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.

Working Conditions

Works in laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant biomedical science field.
  • Analytical, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and to communicate data clearly in both oral and written/graphical formats.
  • Cell culture, mouse handling, and at least basic microbiology and/or cloning experience.
  • Computer literacy including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data.


Required Qualifications

PhD or master’s degree with 4 years of experience in research lab operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 9 years.

Salary Range
$47,000.00 - $85,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
