Job Summary
Eastern Washington University seeks an experienced and dynamic leader to serve as the next Associate Dean of the College of Professional Programs. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean will provide leadership for the college and implement decisions made by the Dean. This full-time position (1.0 FTE) involves working closely with CPP chairs, directors, and other Dean’s office staff to coordinate overlapping responsibilities and manage a portfolio of areas assigned by the Dean.
Key Responsibilities Include:
1. College Leadership & Representation: The Associate Dean serves as a key representative of the College, providing leadership and advocacy both internally and externally. This includes representing the College at various community and university events, developing and ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations, and fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.
2. Personnel Management: In collaboration with the Dean, oversight of personnel management within the College is a critical aspect of the role. This includes supporting department chairs and college office staff, participating in College-level review of personnel needs, tenure, promotion, and annual evaluations. to meet the College’s strategic goals.
3. Scheduling & Enrollment Management: A key aspect of this position is in managing class schedules, faculty workloads, and student enrollments to enhance student success. This involves working closely with department chairs and program directors to ensure optimal resource utilization and alignment with academic goals.
4. Curriculum Management: The Associate Dean works alongside department chairs and program directors to develop and enhance curriculum offerings within the College. This includes involvement in program development, curriculum review and assessment, and ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and industry needs.
5. Outreach & Student Activities: Engaging with internal and external stakeholders is essential. The Associate Dean participates in developing and maintaining relationships within the university community and beyond. Additionally, overseeing activities aimed at student recruitment, retention, and engagement supports a vibrant learning environment.
Additionally, the Associate Dean contributes to the advancement of the College’s strategic goals, including fundraising efforts, alumni engagement, and the implementation of strategic initiatives.

Conditions of Employment
  • This is a full-time administrative position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The successful candidate will be subject to a tenure review and approval prior to hire. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and/or weekends to fulfill special projects and events, have a valid Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle for occasional local travel to meetings as needed. Mileage reimbursed at state rates.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD or equivalent.
  • Tenured or tenure track faculty member OR, under unique circumstances, a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer could serve as Assistant Dean for faculty appointments within the College of Professional Programs.
  • Proven effectiveness in communication, mentoring, and team building.
  • Knowledge of College and University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to systematically gather and analyze data to complete duties in the assigned areas.
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.
Preferred Qualifications
Experienced Leader in Higher Education
  • A distinguished record in teaching, research/creative activities, and professional service sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured full professor in a department or school within the college
  • Demonstrated success in managing projects to completion
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collective bargaining and shared governance environment
  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading recruitment, retention, and advising initiatives
  • Experience working with first-generation and underrepresented populations
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Although most accredited programs have faculty well-versed in their accreditation requirements and processes, associate deans can be a great resource, especially with the associate dean leadership in assessment.

    Responsibility / Duty
    Operating across all colleges and programs in the College of Professional Programs, the Associate Dean’s areas of responsibility would include one or more of the following:
    College Leadership & Representation. The Associate Dean will lead the College and represent the Dean and the College at various community and University events. The Associate Dean will administer the adoption of appropriate compliance for all relevant policies and procedures, rules and regulations adopted by the EWU Board of Trustees, and proper laws of the State of Washington and Idaho.
    Personnel Management. This position will support the Dean in overseeing Department Chairs, Program Directors, and office staff, and work collaboratively with Department Chairs, Program Directors, and faculty and staff, coordinating and managing related activities.
    The position will conduct workload analyses and provide workload recommendations to the dean. The Associate Dean will participate in the college-level review of tenure, promotion, and annual evaluations in collaboration with the College and unit personnel committees.
    Scheduling and Enrollment Management – During the academic year and summer term, the Associate Dean(s) receive, compile, analyze, and monitor data on class scheduling, regular faculty workloads, part-time faculty assignments, student enrollments, waitlists, numbers of majors and graduates, GECR capacities and options, and program audit/assessment for the entire college, including multi-term scheduling.
    Curriculum Management. The Associate Dean will work alongside Department Chairs and Program Directors on program and curriculum development. The position coordinates curriculum management with other EWU units and across schools and programs.
    Outreach and Student Activities. The Associate Dean will participate in developing and maintaining activities in support of student outreach. The activities will include student recruitment, engagement, retention, and degree completion.
    Accreditation. The Associate Dean will collaborate with CPP programs that seek and maintain accreditation with external professional organizations. The position will track accreditation standards, expenses, and changes across all relevant schools and programs within CPP.
    Assessment. The Associate Dean will collaborate with relevant University assessment units and CPP schools and programs to collect and track appropriate assessment data within CPP. The position will represent the CPP Dean’s office on assessment-related committees and report assessment processes and outcomes to the Dean’s office team.
    Research and Grants. The Associate Dean will collaborate with the Office of Grants and Research Development, chairs, program directors, and faculty to identify research and grant opportunities, coordinate mentoring support for faculty, oversee award management, and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and university regulations, policies, and procedures.
