Position Summary
Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a full-time Staff Scientist. The position will serve in the School of Medicine, Department of Cell Biology and Physiology. The position assists in developing and conducting research projects, including experiment design, data analysis and documentation of experiment results. The position conducts research and studies in the fields of basic cellular metabolism and the biochemical underpinnings of metabolic dysfunction in human disease. This work primarily includes the investigation of mitochondria – tiny cellular metabolic machines that play a central role in providing cellular energy and in synthesizing essential cellular molecules. In particular, the laboratory seeks to establish functions for the hundreds of proteins within mitochondria that have not been studied, including many implicated in human disease, and to define the means by which mitochondrial activities are regulated and coordinated with the rest of the cell.


Job Description

Key position responsibilities include: 

  • Following instructions and discussions with principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
  • Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
  • Conducts literature searches related to research project.
  • Designs and executes experiments, analyzes data, and writes manuscripts for publication. Specific laboratory research techniques include yeast genetic screening, protein assays, mammalian cell culture, and analytical techniques such as HPLC and mass spectrometry.


Required Qualifications

Must have a Master’s degree in Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, or closely related field (or foreign equivalent). Must have at least four years of experience in research lab operations settings, including four years' experience analyzing and interpreting data related to the investigation of protein mechanisms in mitochondria research. The position requires Domestic travel up to 10% of the time to attend scientific conferences.
