The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education (SNAP-Ed) Nutrition Educator will deliver established SNAP-Ed public education to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among limited resource families and individuals encompassing all age groups in various locations in Chenango, Cortland, and Madison Counties. Under the direction of the Southern Tier Region Environmental Nutritionist, the educator will teach nutrition education with a focus on general nutrition, food preparation, food safety and food budgeting to SNAP eligible or SNAP recipients via workshops, events or food demonstrations. Nutrition education may take place at a variety of locations including but not limited to County agencies, libraries, schools and community agencies. This position may provide data entry and management of participant data, requiring confidentiality.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in Nutrition, Health Education or Public Health or equivalent. GED/High School Diploma plus one year of transferable program/functional experience may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.

  • 1-2 years volunteer or work-related experience

  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to read and write in English.

  • Ability to present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences and work with diverse audiences of all ages.

  • Basic computer and word processing skills.

  • Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment and climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Must be comfortable purchasing and preparing foods and reviewing and following recipes.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally or in writing.

  • Must be able to maintain a positive attitude and a collaborative workstyle.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in adult and youth education or other relevant work experience.

  • Experience working with the target audience (limited resource).

  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with immediate supervisor.

Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Program Delivery – 85%

  • Utilize established SNAP-Ed curricula and existing program materials to teach a specified number of workshops, events and food demonstrations and educate a targeted number of adult and youth participants who are SNAP eligible or SNAP recipients.

  • Implement lesson plans using current and approved curricula and supplemental materials.

  • Implement programs that address participant’s needs and that consider the diversity of the community. 

  • Provide research based materials and resources to participants, staff and other groups, as they are identified.

  • Deliver SNAP-Ed programming at health fairs, community events and other events as needed.                           

  • Inform participants of other Extension programs, community agencies, and services.

  • Collaborate with community agencies that serve the target audience.

Program Evaluation – 5%

  • Recommend program changes to strengthen and improve programs.

  • Implement program evaluation as designed.

  • Interact with various constituencies to assist in obtaining their evaluation of programs.

Administrative Coordination/Operation – 5%

  • Complete necessary written documentation for program evaluation as required by programs and funders.

  • Maintain extreme confidentiality of information and data collected.

  • Organize and coordinate SNAP-Ed program activities to support the delivery of established program goals.

  • Maintain record of class participants and complete reports as required by programs and funders.

  • Transport program materials and resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.

  • Submit accurate program-related expense receipts and mileage reports promptly.

  • Accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, non-exempt position (40hrs/week). The hourly rate for this position is $20.00.
