What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the SERF Operator 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

SERF Operator 2 $48,600 - $74,700

As a U&I Operator 2, you will report to the U&I Water, Gas, Wastewater, & SERF Operations Manager. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining the Sanitary Effluent Reclamation Facility (SERF) which is an industrial water treatment facility that processes sanitary effluent for industrial water reuse. Operations of SERF include Reverse Osmosis units, Micro-filters, precipitation and settling reaction processes, a variety of water constituent testing, and acid and base chemical systems. Operators work closely with Operations Specialist, System Engineers, Maintenance, and Safety personnel to support the facility operation.

SERF Operator 3 $58,000 – $90,800

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful applicant will analyze /troubleshoot operational system problems and in concordance with the Lead Operator implement corrective actions. The successful candidate will also be expected to begin learning other water treatment operations that are overseen by SERF staff, to include Boiler/Steam water treatment as well as develop an in-depth knowledge of the sanitary Waste Treatment system for the Lab. An Operator 3 will also begin learning Environmental compliance issues associated with SERF and the Process for dealing with Environmental issues.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of performing routine facility or area walk-downs, inspections and/or evaluations to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facility related to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and/or computing systems. Independently perform these actions when related qualifications are complete.

  • Knowledge of performing basic operation and monitoring of equipment or SCADA/HMI computers. Independently perform these actions when related qualifications are complete.

  • Knowledge of observing equipment and control panels for operator messages or error indicators. Independently perform these actions when related qualifications are complete.

  • Basic knowledge of responding to facility or control room emergencies and abnormal events; respond to after-hour call outs as directed.

  • Experience performing Post Maintenance Testing and Acceptance.

  • Experience setting up and running diagnostic Wet Bench tests.

Additional Job Requirements for Operator 3 :

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • D irect experience with one or more of the following systems: reverse osmosis, micro-filtration, precipitation, and pH control equipment and processes, chemical handling.

  • Experience operating and maintaining mechanical and electrical systems (Pumps, valves, MCC control panels, etc), operating a forklift and/or a hand truck.

Training/Certifications : The successful candidate(s) will be required to test for and obtain, at a minimum, a NM Level 1 Waste Water Operator Licenses, within 1 year of hire. Obtaining and maintaining a Level 4 Waste Water Operator licenses is required.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a high school diploma and one-to-two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a high school diploma and two-to-four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Direct experience with three or more of the following systems: reverse osmosis, micro-filtration, precipitation, and pH control equipment and processes, chemical handling.

  • Experience operating and maintaining mechanical and electrical systems (Pumps, valves, MCC control panels, etc), operating a forklift and/or a hand truck.

: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
