Summary

The laboratory of Dr. Matthew McGinley in the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking applicants for a Senior Staff Scientist position. The McGinley lab studies the neural circuit basis of sensory-guided behavior in health and disease. The Senior Staff Scientist will contribute critically to generating critical data and training and assisting graduate students and postdocs in the lab on their projects, as well as analyzing data and assisting with paper and grant writing. The purpose of this vital position is to facilitate and set the standard for our complex and multi-faceted lab to smoothly produce high-quality results and make discoveries.


Job Duties
  • Conducts research experiments, including auditory patch-clamp electrophysiology and two-photon imaging in mice presented with sounds and/or engaged with decision-making behaviors.
  • Documents and interprets results of experiments and reports to principal investigators.
  • Performs technical laboratory procedures:
    • Rodent surgeries with aseptic technique
    • Virus Injection o Animal Husbandry
    • Autoclaving surgical instruments
  • Selects and determines appropriate research procedures.
  • Collects and analyzes data and maintains records.
  • Enters data into research databases.
  • Helps supervise projects performed by research technicians, graduate students, and postdocs.
  • Assists with preparing laboratory reports, progress reports for grants, etc.
  • Operates laboratory equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Seven years of postdoctoral  research experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with animal behavior, animal surgeries, brain physiology, or computation
  • Knowledge on software/hardware relating to behavioral and/or physiological data acquisition and analyses (Python, Matlab, LabVIEW)
  • Ability and desire to work closely with and help coordinate a large and diverse team of scientists and engineers
  • Strong communication skills, including sensitivity to diversity and a positive attitude
  • Strong organization skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability to unexpected developments and to a fast-paced and rapidly evolving research program
  • Strong work ethic
