The Radiation Safety Senior Specialist position in the Medical Physics & Radiation Safety (MPRS) division of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is primarily based on the Medical Campus while remaining flexible in assignments across all areas and departments served by EHS including Boston Medical Center. The position ensures a safe radiological environment that is compliant with all policies, standards, regulations, and laws. The position works under the Direction of the Director of MPRS and is responsible for radiological safety on both campuses and hospital. The position is expected to regularly exercise discretion utilizing advanced technical knowledge and skills in radiation safety and handle complex, technically difficult hazard assessments, identifications, and resolution determinations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve with an experienced Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Manages the personal dosimetry program.
  • Conduct radiological surveys in research and healthcare facilities on the medical campus including a large teaching hospital.
  • Develops recommendations based on surveys conducted.
  • Prepare facilities for regulatory inspections.
  • Assists RSO in the preparation of reports too institutional committees.
  • Works with MPRS team in managing radioactive use permits.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal radiological safety standards.
  • Maintains associated records.
  • Conduct radiation safety training.
  • Maintains radiation monitoring equipment.
  • Conduct incident investigations and develop recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Assists with the Radiofrequency, Laser Safety, and other programs as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other EHS staff to develop and improve safety programs.

Required Skills

  • Requires: B.A./B.S. in a scientific discipline (health physics, physics, biology, chemistry).
  • Knowledge of radiation regulations and programs.
  • Three to five years of radiation safety experience, preferably in an academic or healthcare setting.
  • Number of years and type of experience may substitute for education.
  • Specific radiation safety experience or certificates in related field or professional certifications preferred.
  • Have or obtain the 24 or 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training.
  • This position requires successful completion of a pre-placement physical.
  • Working knowledge of safety information management systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
