Senior Research Specialist - School of Medicine, Infectious Diseases (The Hope Clinic)

The Hope Clinic of the Emory Vaccine Center is an international Center of Excellence in clinical and translational research in infectious diseases vaccines, treatment, and prevention. The mission of the Hope Clinic is to conduct human research studies and clinical trials for infectious diseases of public health importance. The clinical studies encompass vaccines, treatments, prevention, community-based research, and laboratory-based translational human immunology.  

 

The Scherer Lab at Emory University (Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases) aims to understand immune mechanisms that underlie durable and protective B cell responses in order to more reliably design infectious disease vaccines that provide life-long immunity. We work with both human subjects and animal models to explore immunologic mechanisms involved in B cell memory formation. We are currently seeking a highly motivated, organized, and productive scientist to fill a Senior Research Specialist position in a growing lab. This position will perform research independently and assist with laboratory operation, particularly related to ongoing vaccine immunology projects. Specifically, this position will involve: conducting immunological assays, animal procedures, and assay development; analyzing and interpreting data and results; preparing written materials, charts/graphs, research results, and budgets for publication, presentations, or grants; delivering updates/presentations for internal lab meetings; training research staff; reviewing and synthesizing literature; ordering supplies; and assisting with basic lab upkeep. It will require work with human specimens, pseudoviruses (risk group 2), mice, and cell lines. Salary will be commiserate with experience. Research experience involving cell culture, flow cytometry, high-throughput assays (i.e.,  96-well), mice handling and procedures (immunization, anesthesia, blood and tissue collection), and immunology-related projects is a preferred qualification. Successful applicants will have a the ability to work effectively with others.

 

The PI has an established track record of translational research in the field of viral and vaccine immunology.

 

The Scherer Lab is seated in Division of Infectious Diseases and Hope Clinic which provide outstanding and stimulating scientific environments with multiple supportive core facilities and shared resources. JOB DESCRIPTION:

• Independently performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
• Devises highly specialized research procedures by applying a knowledge of advanced research techniques and equipment.
• Provides input to protocol development.
• Serves as a technical resource for other research personnel.
• Analyzes and interprets the results of studies.
• Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.
• Trains research staff in specialized procedures and theoretical concepts for unique tests.
• Recommends new equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures.
• Provides input into the development of departmental goals and objectives.
• May assist in grant and other funding application preparation.
• Review literature for related research developments and techniques.
• Prepares written materials, charts and graphs on specialized techniques and research results for publication or presentation.
• Oversees quality assurance of research performed by others.
• Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
• Performs related responsibilities as required.
• Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
