Job Description

Purpose:

Leads research activities assigned by the Principal Investigator or project leader. Performs independent research activities in a technically/scientifically specific realm. Co-supervises and/or manages activities of project teams that include faculty, professional researchers, technical personnel, project personnel, and students. The nature of the duties requires advanced knowledge of the field. The position also requires effective communication and consistent exercise of discretion and judgment.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing research projects and writing and submitting proposals to solicit funding for the center.
  • Identifying and developing new research, workforce development and project opportunities and clients.
  • Leading project teams and managing technical, programmatic and financial aspects of projects.
  • Assist in writing research proposals to secure funding.
  • Leading organization of Centre’s annual symposium and other outreach activities.
  • Developing content for and teaching continuing education courses and/or academic courses.
  • Developing, formatting, and editing technical documents such as technical reports, social media posts, status updates, presentations, and correspondence.
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to organizational standards in all documents produced.
  • Create research-driven, visually appealing, and engaging technical document materials using various tools and software.

Project Scheduling and Coordination:

  • Technical review of the literature on ocean engineering related topic and developing relevant documents
  • Facilitate the development of accurate project plans, timelines, and schedules, ensuring alignment with project goals and objectives.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks or delays, and communicate when appropriate solutions may be needed.
  • Organize and facilitate team meetings, workshops, and technical training sessions.
  • Promote a positive team environment and ensure all team members understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Display exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ensure accuracy, clarity, and coherence in all written technical materials.
  • Edit and proofread documents for technical grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style

Equipment/software/systems:

  • Equipment related to calorimetry, fire and explosion, corrosion testing and experimentation.
  • Software and computation systems related to consequence analysis frequency analysis or risk assessment, process safety relevant analyses, large sets of data manipulation and machine learning.
  • Personal and desktop computers

What we need:

  • Master’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six years of related experience.

What is helpful:

  • PhD in Chemical/process/Petroleum/Mechanical/Oil and Gas Engineering.
  • Significant experience in research proposals and peer journal paper writing.
  • Relevant Engineering project management experience.

The Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center (MKOPSC) focuses on research to enhance safety in the chemical process industry.
