The Senior Reporting Analyst will work as a member of the Administrative Technology Services team to deliver reporting solutions to the research administration and research compliance community. Harvard University’s research portfolio relies on a set of software applications, both custom and vendor-provided, supporting the research life-cycle. The team is responsible for designing and enhancing those IT systems and supporting the academic and administrative staff using the systems and reporting solutions. This position will have a primary focus on reporting and analytics. The Senior Reporting Analyst works closely with the user community, fellow team members, and technical partners to design, test, implement, and support ongoing and emerging reporting needs such as reports, dashboards, and analyses. The University’s enterprise reporting platform is Oracle Analytics Server (OAS)/Oracle Business Intelligence.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop reporting solutions—dashboards, reports—working in the lifecycle from initial discussion through design, development, and testing.
  • Engagement with the Harvard research administration and compliance user community in their reporting and analytics needs including meeting facilitation and user research.
  • Test reporting solutions including developing and documenting test plans and tracking bugs through to resolution. Additionally, considering user impact and accessibility requirements.
  • Participate in the identification of change management requirements, assist in the development of training materials, end user documentation, and guidance. Provide support and hands-on training and guidance, as needed. Develop documentation such as a data dictionary, business glossary, and reports catalog.
  • Provide support to our users; troubleshoot, de-bug, and test existing reports.
  • Attend relevant conferences and trainings.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Participate fully in the build, configuration and documentation of IT infrastructure
  • Ensure adherence to IT standards and service level objectives.
  • Monitor and optimize IT infrastructure.
  • Define and track performance metrics to ensure efficient use of IT resources
  • Design and implement robust and secure IT solutions
  • Identify opportunities to leverage technologies and improve processes/services and implement related enhancements
  • Support and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison and mentor junior staff
  • Contribute to establishment of best practices
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education and/or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • BA/BS in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or business-related major such as economics, finance, or accounting or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in report development including design, testing, and implementation.
  • Expertise in SQL and/or data querying / data modeling tools and technologies.
  • Experience with business intelligence platforms such as Oracle Analytics Server/Oracle Business Intelligence, Power BI, and Tableau.
  • Experience with project management, including requirements gathering, meeting facilitation, and change management.
  • Strong listening and collaboration skills and demonstrated experience working as a member of a team.
  • Proven ability to quickly assimilate to new technology and/or applications required.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a technical, data analysis, or report development role.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills, especially customer service skills and service mindset approach.
  • Must understand basic fundamentals of iterative development, software development processes and procedures; understand incremental delivery and the value of metrics.
  • Familiarity with Agile and scrum techniques is a plus.
  • Knowledge of research administration and research compliance business areas (example: grants management, financial management, etc.) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence) a plus.
  • Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility and the ability to get up to speed quickly in the Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) environment and with the enterprise applications we support.
  • Must have proven ability to initiate and manage multiple tasks under competing deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Able to work independently and within small and large teams.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Working Conditions

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing, based on the department’s current presence on campus.

Harvard is an on-campus community and all positions are based in Massachusetts. We currently expect that employees in Department will work remotely until Fall, 2021. Effective October 1st, as a condition of continued employment, all work must be performed in a state where Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, VT). 

HUIT  is currently developing hybrid workplace models which actively support remote work (within a Harvard registered state) where business and team needs allow. Any remote scheduling of your work, agreed to by your supervisor, will need to be in a state in which Harvard is registered as an employer as a condition of continued employment.  Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will may discussed during the interview process.
