Job Summary

The Sr. Director of Information Technology leads the team responsible for the operation and evolution of the technology environment supporting the clinical administrative, teaching, and research activities for the school. The Sr. Director will continue to develop and foster long-term relationships with multiple major partners across the University, which include Harvard University IT (HUIT) and the Harvard Medical School (HMS) Information Technology Office. Additionally, the Sr. Director will be the primary resource to understand HSDM engagement with Harvard Medical School and Harvard University IT service providers and will, as needed, serve as the voice of HSDM to those partners. The Sr. Director will be comfortable building out a new function, iterating and adapting as needed. The Sr. Director will be comfortable working both independently and in close coordination with a team and will demonstrate a high degree of sophistication and professionalism to ensure strong relationships are cultivated and services are delivered in support of HSDM values, particularly with respect to open communication, user-focused engagement, and collaboration. They are responsible for understanding the business priorities of the HSDM community, mapping those priorities to services offered by internal and external partners, and managing the relationships with those partners to ensure efficient and effective service delivery to the students, faculty, and staff.

Position Description

  • Creates, implements and maintains HIPAA-compliant and secure computing and information technology environment, strategic plans, policies, programs, and schedules for research and clinical data processing, computer services, network communications, EHR support, and management information services to accomplish the growth, goals and objectives of HSDM.
  • Manages the team responsible for the ongoing operations, upgrades, and collaborate with HMS Information Technology on network, computing, storage, identity, support systems, and infrastructure to support HSDM Clinical technology and services as well as the day-to-day operations of the HSDM technology environment, including the Audio/Visual equipment used in HSDM buildings.
  • Manages the budget and administrative processes for the IT Department.
  • Acts as a consistent point of contact with partners, serving as the first stop for any needs, requests or challenges while also fostering direct relationships with partners and members of the HSDM community, as appropriate.
  • Understands the breadth of programs and services being delivered to school customers, ensuring partners are coordinated and effectively delivering. Proactively fosters information sharing across School and partner services that affect the HSDM community.
  • Engages across the School as needed, work with partners to conduct IT planning and explore strategic priorities, helping to determine an effective path forward.
  • Develop maps of partner engagement, noting services, program engagement, and key account staff.
  • Effectively manages the relationships with vendors internal to Harvard and external third parties on behalf of the HSDM and its community, acting as an advocate as necessary
  • Under the guidance and oversight of the HMS CISO, serves as the security and privacy leader for HSDM in collaboration with the HSDM Senior Director of Compliance, Risk Management and Strategic Projects.
  • Collaborates with Dean for Administration and Chief Operations Officer, senior leadership, and department chairs to align strategic priorities and projects for HSDM through robust engagement and planning for the realization of short- and long-term goals. Serves as a strategic thought partner to HSDM Senior leadership to provide recommendations in a wide range of HSDM matters. Proactively identifies synergies across the school to leverage resources, increase efficiencies and reduce costs.
  • Serves on HSDM committees and as a HSDM representative on assigned university committees.
  • Contributes to the mission and vision of HSDM and models the School's core values in all facets of the work.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in technology, business administration or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of IT business related experience with at least 5 years of direct partner engagement and on-site management experience with increasing responsibility and engagement at a strategic level
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing IT strategies aligned with short- and long-term goals.
  • Significant experience managing HIPAA compliance and information security.
  • Demonstrated experience with implementing, enhancing, and supporting clinical software tools and technology.
  • Experience with budget management and project management.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background check at hire.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong personnel management expertise.
  • Experience EHR systems, preferably with AxiUm software and clinical operations.
  • Experience with Dental School clinical and research environment.
  • Ability to think critically, anticipate challenges, and resolve issues.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, in both verbal and written form.
  • Ability to address emergent situations outside of regular business hours.
  • Ability to prioritize work and HSDM projects, frequently balancing multiple responsibilities with competing deadlines.

Physical Requirements

  • May be required to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • This position may require spending time in the clinical/lab areas.

  • The primary work location for this position is Boston, MA. Per the University payroll policy all work (including remote) must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business. In order to be on Harvard payroll, you must reside in a University payroll registered state .
