About the Department
 

The Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at UChicago (BFI) is looking for a Multimedia Associate to contribute to communications and outreach materials. You will work under the supervision of the Senior Digital Media Manager and Communications Manager and collaborate with members of the BFI communications and events team. In this role, you must have a sharp eye for visual detail and be able to work within an established design system to produce a variety of assets for both print and web. This is a challenging entry-level position with growth potential. Job Summary
 

This position provides professional support and solves straightforward problems in a range of design projects. Works within defined processes and procedures to develop design standards and concepts for University advertising and communications materials. Completes a variety of assignments, as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Produces final design materials for print (brochures, research summaries, event materials) and web (web pages and graphics, social media graphics, email newsletter materials).
  • Leads and manages the content, design, and approval process for key BFI communication assets, including research brief (figures and graphs) and BFI’s weekly newsletter.
  • Takes on special video and audio projects to support BFI’s growing multimedia efforts (recording/editing video for events, recording audio for podcasts). Takes photographs of conferences, seminars, and otherwise as needed.
  • Manages the design and production of event materials (signage, printed programs, slides).
  • Manages the design and production of visual elements for BFI, such as social media, Saieh Hall lobby screen, and Podcast, etc.
  • Provides professional support and performs routine assignments related to design projects.
  • Works within defined processes and procedures to develop design standards and concepts for University advertising and communications materials.
  • Completes a variety of assignments, as needed.
  • Creates graphic artwork, such as charts, graphs or illustrations, for various publications, advertising materials and/or customers with limited supervision.
  • Assists in the coordination of all graphic production scheduling, including preparing final layouts for print.
  • Uses and develops on-the-job experience to complete a variety of assignments, such as coordinating production support with outside vendors, as needed.
  • Works within defined processes to ensure that graphic projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the user's satisfaction.
  • Collaborates with members of the BFI communications and events team to develop and lead project requirements and concepts.
  • Uses various techniques and templates from the BFI design system to produce print and digital materials.
  • Investigates new software solutions for design challenges.
  • Incorporates feedback to improve work and revises to approval.
  • Coordinates all graphic production scheduling, including preparing final layouts for print.
  • Uses on-the-job experience to complete a variety of assignments, such as coordinating production support with outside vendors, as needed.
  • Works within processes to ensure that graphic projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the user's satisfaction. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • BS/BA in design, multimedia, or a related field.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of visual elements (color, type, image, illustration).
  • Good understanding of sticking within an established design system (i.e., BFI/University of Chicago brand), while also offering up new, creative ideas for outreach materials.
  • Fluency with Adobe InDesign and graphics editing tools (Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Basic video editing and video production a big plus.
  • Background with newsletter content and design development.
  • Familiarity with WordPress and website management.

  • A keen eye for detail and effectively proof work.
