ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The power supply engineer will coordinate and direct the work of electrical technicians and designers developing, designing, procuring, testing, and installing magnet power supplies and devices for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). In this role you will collaborate with and support RHIC project scientific staff, other electrical engineers, systems controls engineers, and mechanical engineers. These power supply systems control the path of the beam for the hadron storage ring. This position will work with the power supply group leader and project staff in defining the power supply system configurations to meet system requirements as well as documenting and developing plans, schedules, and cost, tracking and managing execution, and monitoring and reacting to project risks and scope adjustments. We seek an individual with a background in DC and ramped high and low current power supplies and power electronics to develop and write specifications for these power supply systems. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with the Power Supply Systems Group Leader, accelerator physicists, and RHIC system managers and engineers to develop, define, and document detailed requirements and specifications for magnet power supply systems.
Coordinate and supervise other engineers and technicians to deliver RHIC power supply systems and components from initial concept through engineering analysis, detailed electrical, electronic design, system electrical, mechanical, and controls integration, detailed fabrication specifications and drawings, design and safety reviews, purchase documentation, vendor oversight, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning.
Work as part of a team in all magnet power supply system projects developing project plans, defining and documenting scope, required labor and material resources, schedules, and procurement plans, establishing milestones and maintaining a current detailed schedule.
Ensure that magnet power supply systems and components have well-defined specifications for support systems (electrical power, water cooling, HVAC, compressed air, and controls) and that these are communicated with the responsible support groups.
Support interface management with other accelerator systems to resolve technical conflicts for beamline position, support building space, cable tray space, and other infrastructure systems.
Support project interface management to resolve conflicts for technician support, inspection and assembly facilities, and storage facilities, including planning and scheduling technical support, planning and defining technical support space and storage space needs at BNL, and planning and scheduling pulsed power system installation.
Work with the Power Supply Systems Group Leader to identify areas where research and development are required.
Ensure that all work is planned and executed in accordance with BNL and EIC ES&H policies and procedures.
Maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration, innovation, and respect for all.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
BS in Electrical Engineering
Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant engineering experience that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of DC and ramped high current power supplies, power electronics, and high voltage power devices and systems, design, development, and testing experience on creative engineering projects (collaborating with a team to develop and build unique scientific equipment) as well as management and supervisory experience of an engineering and/or technical staff
Experience with field-programmable gate array(FPGA)
Knowledge of SCR rectifier, linear, and switching type power supplies
Experience with electronic test equipment including function generators, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters
Ability to work independently and collaborate/interact with and report to management and scientific staff for assignments, guidance, and support
Demonstrated ability to positively interact with and support contractors, vendors, project management and procurement professionals
Excellent written and oral skills and proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
Demonstrated experience organizing and presenting technical status reports
Comprehensive understanding of analog and digital electronic technologies
Knowledge of C, C++ and assembly language
Demonstrated electrical system testing and trouble-shooting skills
Experience with technical software: PSpice, PSIM , MicroCap or other circuit analysis tools, Matlab, MathCad
Project management experience
Clear and concise oral, written communication and presentation skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
Knowledge of super conducting magnet power supplies
Knowledge of accelerator physics and beam accelerator component interactions
Knowledge of accelerator power supply systems including precision DC high current/voltage power supplies, ramping and high current/high voltage power supplies, multi-phase diode and resonant convertors, and feedback control
Formal project management training, and certification.
Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)
Experience with particle accelerator systems and components working with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop, design, build, and commission similar systems
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
Will be required to climb ladders for equipment installation and inspection
Will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker
May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects
