The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Neurobiology, is seeking a Scientist I to join the Peters Lab. The ideal candidate will ultimately be able to function under minimal supervision, communicating effectively with the PI and all lab staff. The position will oversee all lab projects, ensuring adherence to standard operating protocols and record-keeping procedures, and generate reports at the conclusion of each lab project.

 

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.
  • To plan, coordinate and conduct research.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals.
  • Oversees behavioral experiments in rats/mice, including self-administration and tests of cognition, anxiety, and depression.
  • Assists with advanced procedures as needed.
  • Trains personnel in rodent surgical procedures.
  • Oversees the maintenance of transgenic rodent colonies.
  • Collects biological samples from rodents. Performs histology and microscopic imaging on rodent brain tissue.
  • Collects, enters, analyzes, and graphs data according to established lab protocols.
  • Monitors results; detects and reports unusual outcomes.
  • Maintains lab equipment.
  • Performs statistical data analyses and generates project reports with figures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Annual Salary Range   $63,125.00 - $80,000.00

     

    Qualifications

     
    • Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience  
    • OR  M.D. and Master's degree.  
    • OR  Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience  
    • OR  Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of related experience 

    Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. 

     

    Preferences

    • Prior experience working in a basic science lab is required.
    • Prior experience with rodent behavior, histology and microscopy, lab management, and coding (e.g., Python or Matlab) are preferred.
    • Prior experience with transgenic rodent colony management, management of other personnel, and/or experience with specialized software (e.g., Imaris, Ethovision XT) is desired.
