The School of Nursing in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University has developed a research-intensive/teaching/learning environment for students and faculty. About the opportunity

The Associate Chair (AC) is directly accountable to the Dean and serves as the chief administrator overseeing operational functions that enable the execution of the strategic plan and achievement of the School of Nursing’s (SON) goals and mission. The AC provides innovative leadership and oversight for the quality and financial management of the academic programs and enrollment management and student affairs, and oversees the work of the Assistant Dean for Prelicensure Programs, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, Assistant Dean for Research, Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs, and the staff positions reporting directly to the SON Dean’s office.

In addition, the AC works closely with the Dean, faculty, and staff to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and to foster a positive and healthy work environment across the school.

The AC is a member of the Dean’s senior leadership team and works collaboratively with fellow SON senior leadership to ensure the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the organization through shared responsibility of the development, design, and improvement of systems that will lead to the full execution of the strategic plan.

Major Responsibilities

Leadership in Academic Excellence

  • Serves as direct liaison between the academic functions of SON and the business functions and provides strategic direction for maximizing resources and efficiency.  Identifies resources required for the implementation of the strategic plan and potential obstacles that need to be addressed.
  • Provides innovative leadership and ensures the integrity of the academic programs.
  • Leads the planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of program curricula in collaboration with and the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, the Program Directors and the faculty.
  • Partners with and supports the Director of Quality and Compliance to lead the SON accreditation process to ensure compliance with accrediting and licensing requirements.
  • Collaborates with the Dean, Assistant Deans, and College in the development of contracts with health systems and other entities for the delivery of academic programs.
  • When appropriate, represents the SON at the college and university levels and leads SON implementation of university-wide initiatives related to academic affairs such as those to promote greater diversity and inclusion among graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Determines faculty needs to support current and future academic programs in consultation with the Assistant Deans, Program Directors and Dean.
  • Collaborates with Assistant Deans, the faculty search committee and Dean to recruit faculty of the highest caliber to meet the strategic goals of the SON.
  • Provides support to effectively and efficiently align faculty with academic programs, teaching activity and career development.
  • Assures accountability in academic programs for effective utilization of all capital, personnel and revenue resources for priorities and budget forecasts for the academic mission.
  • Collaborates with leadership team on establishing and maintaining a business continuity plan to minimize interruption of instructional delivery in a disaster.
  • Collaborates with Assistant Dean for Research and Director of Global Affairs to ensure that all grants focused on the academic programs adhere to relevant regulations including human subjects protection, HIPAA, and FERPA.
  • Collaborates with Program Directors to implement orientation, development and performance management programs for part-time faculty members.
  • Represents the SON on various SON and University committees and serves as a liaison across the university and health system, providing leadership and strategy for SON’s engagement in campus wide initiatives. 

Faculty Recruitment and Development

  • Cascades SON’s strategy/mission statement throughout the organization for maximal alignment and develops appropriate rewards/recognition and coaching/corrective practices to align personnel with SON goals.
  • Leads strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of initiatives to determine teaching needs, and provides strategic leadership for faculty development, mentoring, recruitment, and retention in collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.
  • Collaborates with the Dean, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and DEIB, and faculty search committee(s) on the implementation and ongoing evaluation of the Diversity Action Plan to recruit and retain a diverse faculty.
  • Works with Dean and School of Nursing Human Resources Manager on preparing for faculty of retirements and faculty requests for leave.
  • Collaborates with Assistant Deans, Program Directors, faculty, staff, college administrators, University resources, and Student Affairs to develop faculty abilities to work with students with diverse learning needs.
  • Oversees the orientation of part-time faculty in collaboration with the academic program directors.

Global and Domestic Academic Initiatives

  • Collaborates with the Director for Global Affairs to optimize international opportunities for students and faculty.
  • Develops new program directors’ knowledge of Federal and university compliance requirements for international students and fellows.
  • Collaborates with program directors and coordination with university Global Experience Office in planning and executing plans for safe student international travel that meets academic accreditation and certification requirements.

Administration and Management:

  • With the aim of financial stability, assists the Dean to marshal limited resources to the most productive uses and identifies potential areas for revenue generation.
  • Drives performance measures for the operation (including a consideration of efficiency versus effectiveness), often in the form of dashboards convenient for review of high-level key indicators.
  • Identifies needed infrastructure and secures resources to support academic programs.
  • Responsible for identifying the faculty and staff needs to support the academic programs and ensuring judicious use of these human resources.
  • Supports the Dean in the strategy and operational objectives of SON’s presence throughout NU Global Campuses.
  • Works closely with the Dean, University leadership, and the College to complete US News and World Report submission surveys for rankings.
  • Represents the Dean at internal and external functions as needed. 
  • Oversees special projects as assigned and directed by the Dean.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctoral degree and eligibility for Massachusetts RN licensure.
  • Minimum 5 years academic experience in progressive leadership roles.
  • Strong record of teaching, research, and service.
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the development and ongoing monitoring of academic program accreditation.
  • Distinguished record of collaboration and scholarship.
  • Demonstrated leadership in national and international educational collaborations preferred.
  • A high level of energy, creativity, initiative, and strong commitment to fostering student learning and academic excellence.
