The History of Art and Visual Culture Program within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a full-time, in-person Instructor. Our ideal candidate is a generalist who can teach broad global surveys; and/or has expertise in Ancient, Medieval and/or Early Modern art and/or visual culture (including material culture and the built world); and can teach a range of courses beyond the Western tradition and prior to 1700 (geographic area of focus is open). Interest in developing the interdisciplinary ground of the program, new courses in areas of expertise, as well as courses that study the cultures of marginalized and/or underrepresented populations in the history of art and visual culture is highly desirable.

  The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach a range of courses including foundational courses in the study of global art history, survey courses in ancient through global early modern topics, and upper-level electives in the area of specialization.
  • Work with the Director the History of Art and Visual Culture Program to strengthen and define the program and curriculum.
  • Work with students to develop their understanding of global art history and visual culture its interconnections and foundational role in the other arts.
  • Advise students -Mentor student research projects in areas of specialization.

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Generally starting at $50,000

  The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Tentative Search Timeline:

Qualifications

If you meet the minimum qualifications, have passion for the work, along with experience in a related field, you are encouraged to apply. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Art History, Visual Studies, Visual Culture, or related field.
  • 2 years of experience teaching at the college level (surveys and electives).
  • Has taught courses in Ancient, Medieval and/or Early Modern Art.  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Art History, Visual Studies, Visual Culture, or related field
  • Expertise in the study of art from cultures of marginalized and/or underrepresented population that broaden the study of Ancient, Medieval and/or Early Modern Art beyond the western tradition.
  • Capable of teaching courses that study the art and cultures of marginalized and/or underrepresented populations in the history of art and visual culture.  

Physical Requirements:

Employees must be able to communicate with students, faculty, and staff and conduct research and/or produce scholarship/creative work.
