About the Department
 

The Institute for Mind and Biology is comprised of twelve faculty Members from the Department of Comparative Human Development and Psychology. In addition to their department appointments, Members contribute significantly to the University's interdisciplinary approach to Neuroscience and Committees on Computational Neuroscience, Evolutionary Biology, Integrative Neuroscience, and Neurobiology. Members also collaborate with other faculty at UChicago in the Biological Sciences Division and Division of the Social Sciences as well as colleagues from around the globe.
The London Lab is interested in how the brain develops, especially how early experience can alter neural function and behavior. The London Lab applies molecular and genomic tools in combination with behavioral manipulations to uncover neural processes that promote and limit the ability of juveniles to learn. The lab uses the zebra finch songbird as the model system because there are sex differences in learning mechanisms, and at least males can learn during only one critical period in development. The research strategy allows one to discover mechanisms that may also be involved in human speech acquisition and other developmentally learned behaviors, as well as environmental influences on the brain development.


Job Summary
 

The job provides basic technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Complies with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

Responsibilities

  • Close contact with small research animals, working as a team with other lab members, helping maintain safety and equipment certifications, and balancing wet lab and animal lab projects.

  • This job provides technical and administrative support in a laboratory environment performing basic laboratory techniques, research and analysis under direction.

  • Provides routine or standardized laboratory duties by collecting data in support of research projects under direct supervision.

  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analysis of data and with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Complies with institution, state and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) and apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related fields (e.g. neurobiology, genomics, animal behavior).
