Job Description

The Biobehavioral Pain, Addiction, Sleep, and Momentary Experience (Bi-PAS ME) Research Laboratory, under the leadership of Dr. Chung Jung Mun within the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University, is currently looking for a Research Technician. This role entails assisting in data collection and management, as well as facilitating various aspects of our research studies.

Essential Duties

The technician's primary responsibilities will encompass:

  • Screening, recruiting, and enrolling participants.
  • Administering informed consent, conducting self-report surveys, and facilitating clinical interviews.
  • Performing cognitive and quantitative sensory testing.
  • Providing training to participants for ambulatory sleep and circadian rhythm assessment.
  • Maintaining comprehensive records of conducted studies, organizing data for computer input, and recording computer output.
  • Conducting data cleaning and routine data analysis procedures.
  • Training students in equipment operation and technical procedures.
  • Supporting participant retention efforts, assisting in the development of project materials, reports, and publications.
  • Conducting participant home visits for sample collection when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Willing to commit to the position for a minimum of 2 years or more.
  • Evidence of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Nursing, Biology, Neuroscience, Social Work, Health and Physical Education or related field.
  • Experience in working with clinical population, such as individuals with chronic illness (e.g., chronic pain), sleep disorder (e.g., insomnia), and/or substance use disorder (e.g., opioid use disorder).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research methods, data collection and analyses.
  • Bi-lingual in English/Spanish.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of good laboratory practices and operation.
  • Evidence of effective communication.
  • Competency in using data management programs (i.e., REDCap and Qualtrics) and statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS) is highly desirable.
  • Experience in using critical thinking to make decisions and/or analyze and report data/results of tests conducted
  • Experience in conducting lab tests using appropriate equipment and protocols
  • Experience in delivering presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Experience in handling petty cash
  • Initiate confidential correspondence on behalf of the project
  • Experience in conducting interviews over the phone or in person
  • Experience in scheduling appointments and maintaining calendar for project
  • Experience in supervising staff and/or students
  • Experience in working under supervision
  • Experience in working from general instructions on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments
  • Experience in working both independently and within a complex structured team.
  • Experience in exercising judgment within generally defined practices & policies to determine appropriate action

Working Environment

  • Ability to lift and transport 25 pounds.

  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Use lab equipment - please specify equipment: Pain testing devices, ambulatory EEG, actigraphy, etc.
  • Use an ASU or personal vehicle to travel to different campuses
  • Use of basic math and a calculator
  • Use office equipment including a desktop computer.
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
