Job Description Summary   

Research Assistant 2-B/H to assist and support scientific investigation to study stem cells and cardiac regeneration as directed in the Department of Emergency Medicine in Dr. Mahmood Khan’s Lab; independently conducts assigned experiments; performs a variety of molecular, cellular, and biological research techniques and procedures including RT-PCR, PCR reactions, immunostaining, gel electrophoresis, cell cultures, and Western analysis; sorts and processes tissue samples (sectioning, staining, embedding and mounting); performs routine procedures on lab animals; assists with care of lab animals; records, consolidates and assists with analysis of research results; quantifies biological results; assists in evaluating validity of data obtained from experimental procedures; summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals and manuscripts; prepares research progress reports; assists principal investigator with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts; conducts library research on requested topics through researching current literature; oversees and maintains accurate records of laboratory activities; assists with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation; sets up and operates laboratory equipment; monitors research supply, including specimens, inventory and initiates procurement requests as needed.

Essential Duties

50%:  Assists and supports scientific investigation to study stem cells and cardiac regeneration as directed; independently conducts assigned experiments; performs a variety of molecular, cellular, and biological research techniques and procedures, including RT-PCR, PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, cell cultures, and Western analysis; sorts and processes tissue samples (sectioning, staining, embedding and mounting); performs routine procedures on lab animals; assists with care of lab animals; oversees and maintains accurate records of laboratory activities.

40%:  Records, consolidates, and assists with analysis of research results; assists in evaluating the validity of data obtained from experimental procedures; summarizes data for inclusion in grant proposals, manuscripts, and professional presentations; prepares research progress reports; assists principal investigator with the preparation of publications, manuscripts, articles, posters, and abstracts; conducts library research on requested topics through researching current literature.

10%:  Assists with training of junior research staff, and undergraduate and graduate students in research methods and equipment operation; sets up and operates laboratory equipment; monitors research supply, including specimens, and inventory, and initiates procurement requests as needed; other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's Degree and one year of experience in a Research Lab setting
