The Research Specialist V, under general direction performs research work involving performance of assignments which may involve planning and directing certain phases of research project.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Twelve years of related research experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

  • Knowledge of probability theory, regression, and analysis of variance

  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical packages such as SAS, R (S+), Stata

  • Ability to meet project deadlines and multi-task

  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics or related disciplines with experience in population health research

  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience

  • Strong background in statistical principles and data analyses are required. 

  • A working knowledge in Stata, SAS, or R (proficiency with multiple statistical programs preferred)

  • Research experience in the peer review process (e.g., publications, federal grants)

  • Experience with advanced methods in statistical analysis (e.g., multiple imputation, propensity scores, survival analysis, geospatial analyses, etc.)

  • Experience in working with large, publicly available databases such as NHANES, BRFSS, etc.

  • Ability to work closely with faculty on preparing manuscripts for submission and during review

  • Experience in presentation preparation and the ability to interpret complex statistical results to any audience

  • Experience in database development and management using database software (REDCap, RDBMS or SQL systems, etc..)

  • Knowledge of additional specialized software (e.g. SQL, Python, ArcGISm, M-Plus)

  • SAS Certifications

Responsibilities:

  • Research and Analysis - Provides research expertise. Performs complex data analysis of population-based health and/or clinical studies and prepares results for presentation and publication. Performs complex analysis and examinations. Uses multiple variable regression models (e.g., linear, logistic, Poisson, survival), latent variables, random effects, MCMC, simulation and missing data. Compiles, analyzes, interprets, and reviews complex data and metadata. Implements and maintains data bases. Prepares and publishes project reports. Assists in the development and writing of grant proposals.

  • Development and assistance - Assists Investigator with the planning and direction of specific phases of research project. Develops and maintains training materials for external users. Trains others in consulting group with statistical methods programming QA/QC. Audits data analysis protocols. May attend local, national, and international meetings. Performs other duties as assigned.
