About the Department
 

The Genomics Facility provides access to advanced genomics technologies to University of Chicago researchers. These technologies include Single-Cell Genomics, Spatial Transcriptomics, Next-Generation Sequencing, Micro-arrays, Sanger Sequencing as well as general nucleic acid sample QC and processing. The Facility is well-supported by the Dean’s office and fulfills an essential role in the continued academic success of the University of Chicago.


Job Summary
 

The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.
This position will perform single cell services as well as micro-array services. Additionally, this position will need to be able to operate the Facility’s sample QC equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the Illumina Sequencing platforms present in the Facility (MiSEQ, NextSEQ, NovaSEQ-X).

  • Along with other members of the facility, operates the Facility’s sample QC equipment, which includes fragment analyzer, bio-analyzer, qubit, Pippin and qPCR instruments.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genomics.

  • Master’s degree.

Experience:

  • Experience working in a Core or Research lab.

Preferred Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate internally with co-workers and externally with Facility clients strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Detail-oriented with a strong sense of work ownership.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to perform lab-based tasks for an extended period of time.
