Research Software Engineer


Job Description

The Computational Research Accelerator, a unit in ASU’s Research Technology Office, researches and promotes hardware and software solutions to computational researchers at Arizona State University. It is dedicated to scaling and accelerating research by enabling cutting-edge technologies which can be run on the ASU’s Top500 ranked High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, Sol. Services include consultations, high-level scientific and technical user support, and the education and training required to help researchers make full use of modern HPC technology as well as national supercomputing resources.

The Research Software Engineer role encompasses:

  • Development of software to support the data acquisition, ingestion, and integration for research projects.
  • Assisting in the development of user interfaces, automated workflows and scalable back-end services.
  • Acceleration of scientific output of computational research projects.
  • Possession of domain expertise to capably interface with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students on a wide range of research projects.
  • Working as part of an existing team, developing and delivering training, and engaging in outreach activities designed to advance research.

Essential Duties

  • Engage the community of computational researchers.
  • Develop / configure software and tools.
  • Work closely with faculty to identify, develop, and implement useful computational methods and resources that support or advance their research.
  • Assist faculty in exploring and applying new strategies, software and tools for their research.
  • Install, resolve issues, and assist users.
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies. Evaluate new technologies and software products to determine feasibility and desirability of incorporating their capabilities within research projects.
  • Contribute to research grant proposal development.
  • Create and present tutorials, hands-on workshops, and documentation to train the research community.
  • Develop and present technical training materials and web-based documentation. Ensures timely systems support and updates.
  • Evaluates past and present technologies to help develop new tools. Ensures all the new tools have been thorough quality control reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field AND six years experience developing software; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Evidence of a PhD degree and one year of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of: 

  • Latest software and design standards.
  • Defining and solving logical problems for technical applications.
  • Selecting, adapting, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
  • Recognizing and recommending needed changes in user and/or operations procedures.
  • Software engineering principles.
  • Programming language.

Education & Experience

  • Experience with software design and development, particularly in R, Python and C++.
  • Experience with active practice of Git-based version control workflows and makefiles.
  • Experience with bash and scripting.
  • Experience developing and maintaining open source software.
