What we want   


The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Scientist to serve as a member of the Medical Physiology Research team. The Research Scientist, under general supervision, is responsible for conducting lab experiments, analyzing, and communicating data in the form of primary research articles, and aiding in grant writing. Assists in supervising and mentoring undergraduate students and newly appointed postdoctoral fellows.

Required Education and Education:

  • Appropriate Ph.D

  • Six years of relevant professional experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

  • Supervisory skill

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and demonstrated expertise in the implementation, execution, analysis of electrophysiological studies

  • Experience investigating synaptic and intrinsic plasticity among mammalian central nervous system neurons in primary culture and ex vivo slice preparations

  • Mastery of whole-cell voltage and current clamp techniques including perforated patch whole-cell recording

  • Data management, security, and archiving skills

Responsibilities:



Research Activities

  • Independently performs experiments for assigned research projects that includes successful expression and activation of excitatory and inhibitory opto- and chemogenetic actuators using transgenic and adeno-associated viral transduction techniques to modulate electrophysiological behavior of neurons under study. 

  • Researches design by surveying literature.

  • Coordinates with research support staff on technical procedures.

  • Designs, performs, and analyzes experiments consistent with project objectives.

  • Conducts independent research aligned with the TAMUS member’s mission.

  • Uses retrograde and anterograde labeling methodologies.

  • Cre-dependent expression of protein actuators and fluorescent protein reporters to restrict analysis to anatomically and chemically specified sets of genetically modified neurons.

Data Analyses & Production of Publications and Presentations

  • Interprets and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques.

  • Assists with the preparation of research literature during manuscript and grant submissions.

  • Presents data at domestic and international scientific meetings.

  • Prepares data for publication and presentation.

  • Keeps detailed records of procedures and data.

  • Mentors technical staff, students, and postdoctoral trainees on analyzing and preparing data for scientific presentations and publications.

  • Assists with writing grants and proposals to acquire external funding.
     

Laboratory Maintenance

  • Coordinates day-to-day laboratory maintenance and maintain laboratory safety manuals.

  • Prepares laboratory reagents and solutions.

  • Maintains laboratory equipment.

  • Provides general lab cleaning to include benches and glassware.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
