RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Research Scientist  position will be an integral member of our research team.  They will be expected to use established protocols to express and purify biochemical-quality protein and nucleosomal reagents. This requires application of protein chromatography techniques, gel electrophoresis, and quality assessment; the use of standard molecular biology protocols for cloning and introducing site-specific mutations into proteins; perform in vitro enzyme assays to monitor ubiquitylation activity on nucleosomal substrates; and assist in the development and optimization of new protocols for the purification and use of new protein reagents, including chemical modifications .

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry + less 3 months of experience in related field.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Research Scientist position is devoted primarily to scientific research and requires a B. Sc. in Biochemistry.  Knowledge of basic biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, and analytical chemistry as demonstrated by successful completion of undergraduate courses is required. Candidates must be capable of applying basic chemical lab practices and techniques (including but not limited to quantitative dry and wet measuring/weighing; ability to calculate required amounts of components for solution/buffer/media preparation; ability to graph and present results) and applying standardized scientific procedures and techniques to assignments of limited complexity and ability to graph and/or present results. Knowledge about and experience with organic synthesis and spectroscopic techniques, such as NMR, is also required.

DESIRED:

An ideal candidate will be someone who (i) has had experience in a laboratory setting in addition to standard chemistry/biochemistry laboratory courses during their undergraduate degree, (ii) will use knowledge gained in their undergraduate degree program to apply fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, (iii) follows procedures for both small projects and/or major project tasks, and effectively manages these under guidance and direction from project staff; interfaces with investigator peers, (iv) can perform tasks and methods as directed, (v) and enjoys interacting with other scientists in a highly collaborative work environment. Additional desirable skills include the ability to perform bacterial growth and transformation, simple molecular biology tasks, protein purification, and gel electrophoresis. Preferred candidates have a strong background in organic chemistry to assist in efforts that require chemical modification of proteins and development of reagents.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Application Process:

The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.  These assessments may include Work Authorization, Cover Letter and/or others.  Any assessments that you need to complete will appear on your screen as soon as you select “Apply to this position”. Once you begin an assessment, it must be completed at that time; if you do not complete the assessment you will be prompted to do so the next time you access your “My Jobs” page.
