The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington seeks a Research Scientist/Engineer 4 (E S UAW RSE) to perform research in seafloor geodesy.

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences leads world-class programs about our home planet and our solar system while emphasizing direct field and laboratory research and educational experiences. Our mission is to further the understanding of Earth, the solar system, and their histories. The Department’s scope extends from the center of Earth to the rim of the solar system, and its activities cut across traditional disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and mathematics. ESS faculty, students, and staff examine Earth’s interior structure, chemistry, motion, and dynamics; geologic hazards; processes affecting the surface environment; the surrounding space environment; planetary processes; and geobiology.

The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 is expected to collect, process, interpret, document, publish, and archive GNSS-Acoustic data.  The research project aims to measure the distortion of the seafloor along global subduction zones with the goal of constraining seismic and tsunami hazards.  The project’s initial focus is on the Cascadia and Alaska subduction zones. The individual will participate in ongoing experiments and will assist with experimental design and operations.  Funding is available to support the position in the first year.  However, the successful applicant is expected to prepare and submit proposals to support themselves and maintain a robust research program for future years.
