The Department of Bioengineering has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Research Scientist Engineer 3.

The position supports ongoing research in the Stevens and Wayne labs in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington. Our laboratories are developing new cell-based technologies for liver, vascular, and immune engineering, and regenerative medicine.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Activities (60%)
• Create disease models and perform surgical procedures in small animals for studies involving cardiovascular, hepatic, and immunengineering.
• Perform small animal surgical prodedures including intracardiac, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous implants.
• Participate in large animal procedures as an assistant and undergo training to be primary surgeon.
• Manage and maintain a small animal colony.
• Manage IACUC protocols for all animal models, including annual and triennial reviews. as well as leading site visits, and ensure experiments adhere to university animal use guidelines.
• Perform small animal husbandry and survival surgery.
• Perform endpoing collection such as blood and tissue collection, necropsy, IVIS imaging, and disease scoring.
• Administer analgesia and anesthesia agents via subcutaneous and intraperitoneal routes.
• Perform lab bench work including, but not limited to, ELISA, flow cytometry, qPCR, RNA extractions.

Research Analysis and Other (40%)
• Train and may manage junior staff on aseptic rodent and large animal procedures.
• Assist internal and external collaborators with project design, data collection, and downward analysis, especially pertaining to small animal studies.
• Analyze and present data at for collaborators, subgroup, and lab meetings.
• Train undergraduates in basic lab procedures, animal restraint and blood draws, and research animal care.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in a Bioengineering or related field such as animal science and four years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED
• Master’s degree in animal science, bioengineering, or related field.
• At least four years of relevant experience in animal models and surgery.
• Experience managing IACUC protocols for animal models.
• Experience training junior staff on aseptic small and large animal procedures.
• Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
• Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently.
