The lab of Professor Nancy Allbritton in the UW Department of Bioengineering has an excellent opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer 3.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The individual in this position will be responsible for performing laboratory work and working with postdocs and graduate students to execute various projects. Specific duties include:

Research activities (70%)
• Construct 2D and 3D scaffolds for small and large intestine including micromolding and soft lithography
• Optimize culture conditions and duration for primary human intestinal cells on and off the intestinal scaffolds
• Assess and implement assay procedures for the various intestinal cell types (stem cells and all differentiated cell-types) on the scaffolds
• Optimize culture systems for intestinal microbiota and intestinal mucus production

Research reporting and laboratory support (30%)
• Prepare data figures, analyses, and reports for funding agencies, and for publications.
• Prepare written reports for meetings with the PI/supervisor.
• Presents research results at lab meetings.
• Maintain the inventory of lab supplies and materials.
• Use department approved methods to purchase goods and materials. Provide required documents to the department’s fiscal office.
• Works under limited supervision, demonstrating the ability to work independently.
• Presents at UW events (journal clubs, lab meetings etc.)
• Presents at national conferences and workshops
• Attends lab meetings and share updates and information with the group.
• Oversees the work of undergraduate and/or graduate students in the lab.
• Trains lab members on the safe and proper use of equipment. Follow up to correct misuse of equipment.
• Report problems to the PI or lab manager.
• Follows standard operating protocols and perform assigned tasks in a manner that is safe for self and others in the lab.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Materials Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemisty and/or related field and four years of relevant experience,
OR
Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED
• Masters/Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering, Materials Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring and training others.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Experience writing for peer-reviewed journals and contributing text and figures to grant proposals.
