RESPONSIBILITIES

This position supports ongoing research in the Daggett lab in the Department of Bioengineering exploring the fundamental conformational properties of the amyloid-beta peptide and the role of toxic oligomers in Alzheimer’s Disease. Specific duties include the following:
• Plan and conduct experiments ranging from peptide synthesis, purification, quality control, performing in vitro and cell-based assays, spectroscopic characterizations, mass spectrometry, as well as maintaining lab instruments.
• Prepare written reports for meetings with the PI/supervisor. Present research results at lab meetings and UW events.
• Take a lead role in writing journal articles for publication in peer reviewed journals and contribute ideas and research summaries/data for inclusion in journal articles written by others.
• Maintain inventory of lab supplies and materials that are needed to conduct experiments. Follow department approved methods to purchase goods and materials and update MyChem to reflect inventory of chemicals.
• Attend lab meetings and share updates and information with the group.
• Oversee the work of undergraduate and/or graduate students in the lab. Train lab members on the safe and proper use of equipment. Train lab members to perform specialized tasks and follow up to correct performance. Report serious problems to the PI or lab manager.
• Write standard operating protocols for lab procedures as requested by the PI/supervisor. Follow standard operating protocols and perform assigned tasks in a manner that is safe for self and others in the lab.
• Prepare new, and update existing, institutional review protocols when there are changes to procedures or personnel.
• Contribute to grant proposals and sponsor reports: Summarize data/results in narrative or graphic form for inclusion in proposals and progress reports. Identify funding opportunities and work with PI to organize proposals.

REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, biochemistry, or related field
• Minimum of two years’ experience working in an academic research setting
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following:
• Chemistry: Organic chemistry and related synthesis; able to obtain and interpret spectra for multiple instruments including NMR, IR, LC/MS, GC/MS, UV/Vis
• Biology: Mammalian adherent and nonadherent cell culture, and transfection; assay protocol development; anti-proliferation, calcium flux, competitive binding, intrinsic fluorescent quenching setup and interpretation, cell microscopy and labeling, ELISA assay setup and interpretation, IC50 setup and interpretation, SDS-Page gels, cell viability and functional assays.
• Demonstrated record of publication as contributing and leading author
• Strong analytical, written and presentation skills
• Capable of multi-tasking and managing multiple priorities
• Ability to work in a collaborative group

DESIRED
• Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
