The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located administratively within International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The core activities housed at CAIH include research studies of infectious diseases and behavioral health, and a training program.

The goals of the behavioral and mental health prevention projects are to co-design and/or implement culturally relevant interventions and evaluate the impact on improving health and sometimes educational outcomes for Native American children, families and communities.  The over-arching goal is to develop successful data-driven and culturally-informed programs for Tribal and other communities in which disparities in health systems threaten the well-being of families and limits their opportunities to flourish and lead healthy lives. 

We are seeking a Research Program Supervisor  works for the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health (Center) as part of its community-based teams. This position is based in Chinle, AZ and works with the Center’s field and Baltimore-based infectious disease faculty and staff. This position maintains knowledge of all of the Center's behavioral health, infectious disease and training projects and may assist with other Center-wide programmatic duties on occasion as they arise.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises research program assistants to include training, evaluating performance and daily work skills
  • Screening, recruitment and enrollment of study participants in a clinical setting
  • Facilitating study visits and ensuring that study procedures are done in accordance with the study protocol and ethical guidelines
  • Working with internal and external study monitors to ensure that proper documentation of all study procedures and administrative requirements
  • Primary collection of study data, data entry, and database management at the site
  • Assisting faculty with study development including creation of data collection tools and promotional materials
  • Coordinate all activities of multiple research projects to assure compliance with all oversight and funding agencies
  • Ensure adherence to protocols and reporting requirements to all mandated agencies
  • Oversee records management for research studies
  • Comply with all budget requirements for research activities
  • Serve as a resource for clinicians involved in the studies
  • Interpret medical data as documented in provider notes and medical records
  • Coordinate study meetings and provide updates on protocol implementation status including recommendations on operational issues
  • Oversee reporting requirements in cooperation with community and tribal partners. Establish and communicate regularly with a community stakeholders to guide intervention and study development.
  • Present study findings at local, national and international levels
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience, supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must be comfortable completing invasive procedures including specimen collection (nasal, saliva, urine, blood) and other samples from participants
  • Proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Independent and self-motivated; highly organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and within a variety of cultures.

Additional Requirements:

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and pharmacological agents
  • Work requires standing and or walking for extended periods of time
  • Work requires manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform research study procedures      
  • Current driver’s license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required
  • Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed
  • Some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required
  • May be required to float to other sites
  • Guidelines regarding travel time and project vehicle use will be clarified based on specific site needs
  • This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
