Experimental and practical quantum information science and technology (QIST) is a key focus of R&D for BNL.  The successful candidate will join a fast-growing QIST group centered in our Instrumentation Division and working in close collaboration with the QIST group at Stony Brook University.

We invite applicants for a two-year Research Associate position with the possibility to extend by another year, to perform research and development in the field of Basic Energy Research within Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST).  One of the fundamental challenges towards implementing scalable QIST systems is to distribute entanglement in a fast and reliable way. To achieve this, key developments are required, mainly, quantum light sources emitting identical single photons at telecommunication wavelengths, and stationary-to-flying qubit interconnects. In this project, you will be exposed to cutting edge interdisciplinary research working on the boundary between condensed matter physics, atomic physics, and quantum communication. You will study interaction of co-designed fast-photons with atomic vapors and contribute to quantum networking experiments in the testbed spanning between Stony Brook University and BNL.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to day-to-day operation of versatile optical microscopes.
  • Contribute to development of Rb-based quantum memories including testing electromagnetically induced transparency EIT and storage.
  • Contribute to experiments on novel semiconductor Quantum Dots devices.
  • Contribute to quantum networking experiments.
  • Test and validate new hypothesis and push boundaries of the QIST field.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Sciences, or related disciplines.
  • Experience in one or more of the following topics: lasers, confocal microscopy, atomic physics, Rb vapors, electromagnetically induced transparence EIT, Hanbury-Brown-Twiss HBT and Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry, molecular-beam epitaxy, clean room RIE/FIB, network infrastructure, quantum networking protocols, quantum key distribution QKD, Bell-state measurements, entanglement distribution and swapping, computer programing.
  • Hard-working, eager to learn and motivated. Ability to work independently and as part of diverse team.
  • Proven written and verbal communications skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good grounding in condensed matter physics, optics, atomic and laser physics
  • Hands-on experience with Rb vapors and EIT
  • Hands-on experience with lasers and microscopy, preferentially on single defects
  • Working knowledge of Quantum Networks (Bell state measurements, entanglement swapping)
  • Hands-on experience with time resolved correlation measurements.
  • Computer programming skills (Matlab/Python)
  • Measurement control (Labview/python)

Other Information:

  • BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
