Harvard Graduate School of Education

Job Summary

The Ecological Approaches to Social Emotional Learning (EASEL) Lab, led by Professor Stephanie M. Jones and Associate Director Rebecca Bailey, seeks a part-time Research Assistant to support our team in the Human Development and Education Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The EASEL Lab explores the effects of high-quality social-emotional interventions on the development and achievement of children, youth, teachers, parents, and communities. Our projects aim to advance the field of social and emotional learning (SEL) through research, practice, and policy.

The EASEL Lab is working with UBS Optimus Foundation to provide guidance and advice as they develop a new global social and emotional learning (SEL) strategy. This work involves conducting the following research activities:

  • Landscape study of global SEL-based program implementation and impact research that informs SEL programming, practices, and measurement. We will also focus on current gaps in existing SEL research, practice, and assessment. This research will serve as the foundation for understanding how SEL is integrated into interventions in global programs, how SEL is measured, and what the impact of SEL may be, among other key concepts, with the goal of identifying a specific SEL focus and project type(s) that are well-aligned with UBS-OF’s education strategy and organizational strengths.
  • Interviews with current grantees to learn more about how they are already supporting child wellbeing (i.e., social, emotional, and related skills) so that we can (a) better understand where and how this work is already being done and (b) identify any best practices, goals, and/or needs that can inform the SEL strategy.
  • Analysis and synthesis of findings into a global SEL strategy and related theory of action for UBS-OF that will focus on opportunities to strengthen the foundation’s SEL work going forward, taking into consideration evidence-based SEL best practices and incorporating important considerations from key program contexts.

  • Position Description

    The Research Assistant will support the project team (including senior researchers at HGSE, an EASEL Lab Research Associate, and student interns) to execute all project activities,

    including scheduling, conducting, and analyzing of program interviews;

    Basic Qualifications

    Minimum 2 years of related experience.  Must have experience with SEL research and/or programs in global contexts (e.g., program design, evaluation, teaching, training/professional development/coaching). This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, demonstrable initiative, ability to work independently, and strong interpersonal and administrative skills. A high capacity to plan and organize is required.
