Position Overview

The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) is seeking a research analyst. Core areas the analyst will be involved in include data analysis and database management for a statewide groundwater quality monitoring network. Other responsibilities will include participation in field collection activities as needed. The ideal candidate will have experience and enthusiasm for computational and field-based hydrogeological research, strong organizational abilities, and an ability to work independently and collaboratively.


Job Description

40%     Conduct spatial and temporal data analysis related to groundwater quality and other hydrogeological research projects within the Geohydrology Division. Conduct geostatistical and time series analyses and develop professional-level graphics, charts, and maps of analysis results.  Assist in presentations of project results as needed.

40%     Manage, edit, and maintain databases within personal computers, enterprise-level relational database management systems, and cloud-based environments.  Develop approaches for data acquisitions, applications, and display, especially related to water quality and hydrogeological features.

10%     Participate in field collection activities related to the water quality program and, when applicable, assist staff in the Geohydrology Division with other field activities related to other hydrogeologic research projects.

10%     Provide support to other miscellaneous activities for the KGS as appropriate. 


Position Requirements

  • Physical ability and willingness to work outdoors in all Kansas weather conditions.
  • Driver's license valid in Kansas.  

Required Qualifications

Qualifications will be measured by application materials, interviews, and references

  • B.S. degree in natural science or engineering.
  • At least two years of combined related experience in the following (may include classroom experience):
    • Experience with ESRI-based GIS software.
    • Experience with manipulating, aggregating, and analyzing data using a programming language (e.g., Python or R).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in coordinated, team environments.
  • Strong communication skills.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in natural science or engineering with an emphasis on hydrogeology or hydrogeochemistry.
  • Experience with data processing, management, and analysis.
  • Experience exchanging, editing, and manipulating digital data between various software and computer platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop customized program applications for relational database management, GIS, and web systems.
  • Familiarity with geoscience data collection practices.
