Summary of Duties:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Medical Assistant Certified (MA-C) will join Range Community Clinic to be part of a world class interdisciplinary patient care team. This multidisciplinary team includes outstanding physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professionals and students to provide the best patient care, education and resources as possible.
This position is a fundamental aspect of the mission of the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is to provide appropriate medical service, education and resources to the rural and under-served populations. The coordinator will identify community needs and be the representative of the Unit, College of Medicine and Washington State University while the unit is in the community providing services.
Patient care will primarily be provided in community based settings via the mobile healthcare unit, partnerships with community organizations and rural community locations. This position will travel for work purposes, sometimes overnight. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends may be required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
70% Patient Care and Provider Assistance
- Welcome patients by greeting them in person or on the telephone.
- Verify patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, confirming purpose of visit or chief complaint.
- Complete patient registration process; schedule patient appointments.
- Prepare patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room.
- Perform preliminary assessment to include taking pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight and temperature; report patient history summary.
- Triage patients based on medical acuity.
- Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records; completing diagnostic coding and procedure coding; keeping patient information confidential.
- Counsel patients by relaying physician’s orders and/or instruction for patient care.
- Provide patient education as directed by clinician on items relating to the patient’s treatment plan and follow up.
- Coordinate with Practice/Business Manager on inventory supply stocking and orders.
- Complete records by recording patient examination, treatment and test results.
- Record billing and insurance information, if applicable, of services rendered.
- Maintains the medical records according to institutional guidelines, ensuring all required documents, results and patient notes are documented in a timely manner.
- Adhere to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements .
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.
- Enhance health care practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Maintains point-of-care testing devices and supplies. Runs periodic quality assurance checks and maintains relevant records.
- Assists clinician with patient services as needed. These include, but are not limited to: chaperoning, minor surgical, procedures, gynecological examinations, collection of lab samples, preparation of medications and microscopic slides.
- Applying dressings, splints and other appropriate medical external devices.
- Follow all Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws.
- Effectively handle patient confidentiality including sensitive information by following all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) laws.
- Helps patient identify socio-economic issues that affect their overall health and develop health/social management plans and goals.
- Cleaning and sanitation of patient rooms and equipment.
15% Standard Operating Procedures
- Facilitates coordination of all providers, staff, and customers on the interpretation and implementation of the program’s SOP and scheduled activities.
- Collaborate with the Mobile Unit Medical Director in developing the Standard Operating Procedures based on researched best practices and industry norms. Implement the procedures, identify and research solutions for inefficiencies within the SOP, and make adjustment to the program appropriately.
- Assists in the development and coordination of the SOP training for staff, students and volunteers.
- Maintain safe, secure and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
10% Community Representation
- Support the Office Manager efforts, as needed, in:
- Engaging community members to capture information regarding potential partnerships.
- Interacting with customers and communities in creating opportunities for the program to provide care to the public and other events.
5% Other
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA);OR high school graduation or equivalent AND one year of experience providing direct patient care in a health care setting; OR equivalent education/experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Must possess a current Washington license as Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Medical Assistant Certified (MA-C).
- Ability to obtain and maintain valid Healthcare Provider CPR certification within 30 days of appointment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required vaccinations for healthcare workers exposed to patients as defined by the CDC, OR provide record of blood serum titre.
- Ability to work independently, ensuring effective use of time including prioritization and organizational skills.
- Ability to travel extended distances in single/multiple day time spans.
- Ability to exercise appropriate judgement in dynamic and changing situations.
- Must have, and be able to maintain, a valid Washington State driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two (2) years’ experience providing care direct patient care in a medical center, hospital, urgent care clinic, pre-hospital environment or other similar healthcare setting.
- Experience working on a Mobile Medical Clinic.
- Experience working in rural and under-served environments.
- Experience with any or all the following activities: purchasing, supplies management, inventory, vehicle maintenance, coordinating staff/volunteers.
- Experience in documenting and maintaining electronic medical records.
- Experience in educating and administering vaccinations and medications.
- Experience in preforming laboratory tests, procedures or treatments, such as nebulizer, blood sugar by finger sticks, electrocardiograms, spirometry and peak flows.
- Experience with blood drawing as needed for lab testing and IV therapy.
- Experience setting up for special procedures.
- Experience in assisting with minor surgical procedures.

Monthly Salary: Range 41: $3,321- 4,324 –Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.
