Job Summary
This position provides exceptional care for our patients and guests by offering them professional service and creating a memorable patient experience. The working title “Medical Support Specialist (MSS)” provides customer service and support to the patients referred to the University Developmental Assessment Clinics (UDAC), facilitating the efficient delivery of patient care. The UDAC is part of the Department of Pediatrics and provides developmental assessments and diagnosis to children at risk for developmental complications. The MSS completes patient registrations, schedules patient appointments, arrives patients and is the “face” of the clinic. This position will work closely with the UDAC team to help ensure our patients receive continuity and quality service and care by providing an exceptional patient experience. This position will also advise patients on financial obligations which may include the establishment of payment plans.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Greets and directs patients to their correct destinations both in person and over the phone.
  • Schedules patient appointments and contacts patients for rescheduling, missed appointments and appointment reminders through EPIC.
  • Completes patient admission and registration process by reviewing accounts and other compliance-related documents for completeness and accuracy. Obtains and documents missing information required for registration.
  • Verifies patient benefits and eligibility, when needed. Collects all necessary co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance, as needed. Responds to questions regarding accounts status, payment arrangements, and concerns.
  • Resolves billing or charge disputes or forwards problem accounts to the appropriate individual for resolution.
  • May need to telecommute wherein you will need to be responsive and available during entire shift, respond to emails and messages promptly, provide a workspace with limited outside distractions, provide and maintain your own internet and phone service
  • Monitors patient flow, adjusts workflows, and notifies the clinical staff of any pertinent information and changes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Comments
Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
  • This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects. This position involves standing for extended periods of time and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.
Minimum Qualifications
• One year of office experience, customer
service experience, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
• Current, valid Utah driver’s license at
time of hire may be required in some
areas.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
