Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, Content Development, the Project Manager manages assigned courses in development and related projects. The Project Management functional team within Content Production develops timelines and budgets, monitors project status and risks across the portfolio of courses and projects in development, facilitates cross-team communication, and ensures appropriate permissions are received to support the development of HBS Online products. The team supports the creation of world-class online courses for Harvard Business School through HBS Online, the school’s digital education platform.


Position Description

  • Serve as project management lead for assigned projects in the team’s portfolio
  • Develop and manage project timelines; provides regular status updates of various forms to numerous stakeholders throughout HBS Online, HBS, and (as required) external entities
  • Review project scope and timeline and provide feedback and direction to project team on implications from production to launch. Quantify and illustrate proposed changes to scope, staffing, or other factors and impacts
  • Facilitate recurring project status meetings
  • Map out project ambitions and resources; illustrate options and trade-offs for multiple stakeholders
  • Manage copyright submissions for HBS Online products
  • Manage protagonist permissions/releases, liaise with protagonists, and provide guidance on course production best practices and permissions management to the team
  • Continuously improve templates in the project management platform; provide or facilitate training and support to Content team to ensure consistency of use and adherence to best practices
  • Identify and work to resolve project issues through process and stakeholder management. Escalate issues, as needed, to reduce risk to the project
  • Engage with faculty, academic support staff and others involved in the course development process as needed
  • Coordinate Beta course launch through completion of first one to three open enrollment waves of a given program
  • Provide inputs for monthly editorial operating expenses on assigned projects
  • Facilitate and manage SOWs for vendor editorial work and ensure alignment with project scope and budget
  • Support course launch events 
  • Be responsible for other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in project management, project plan development and implementation, and stakeholder engagement

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience providing project services in a higher education, professional services setting or publishing industry, or digital product development preferred
  • PMP or similar certification preferred
  • Proficiency with Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) and the ability to implement the best fit for the organization's needs
  • Proficiency in project management, estimating, and scheduling
  • Effective communication skills across multiple formats - project steering meetings, project chartering and kickoffs, stand ups, design sessions, brainstorms, problem solving sessions and retrospectives
  • Experience leveraging program status and performance reporting and project dashboards to improve project outcomes
  • Pitches in where needed – “no job too big or too small”

Additional Information

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus several days per month. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
