Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Reporting to the Lead Engineer the Project Engineer (Electrical) performs professional electrical engineering work including the lighting and power distribution design aspects of projects in campus buildings, generally under $5M. These improvements are initiated and funded by all elements of the institution. The annual active projects workload of Campus Projects averages approximately $22M.
The work includes all aspects of departmental functions related to assigned projects including design, field documentation, production of construction documents, construction administration, and administrative tasks associated with completion of assigned projects. Responsible for coordinating with the Department of Operations and Maintenance and other external units as required to define electrical scope and programming requirements, and overseeing the electrical design and preparation of construction documents for various renovation and small building projects. Also responsible for performing calculations and making equipment selections. Oversight responsibility includes quality assurance reviews and coordination with other design disciplines.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. 

Experience:
  • Five to Seven (5 – 7) years of experience in respective discipline with progressive responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience in renovating existing electrical systems including lighting design, power distribution, and verification of existing conditions. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of sound lighting and power distribution design engineering practice and principles through all phases of work (planning, design, estimating, scheduling, construction administration and financial close-out) and general knowledge of applicable codes and design methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal. Demonstrative professional manner with excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of both design and construction processes including a general knowledge of university buildings, systems and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and carry out complex oral and written instructions including the reading and interpretation of construction documents and specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with design team members, university faculty and administrative personnel.
  • Computer literate (minimum: MS Word and Excel and scheduling software).
  • Ability to organize and multi-task.

Additional Certifications:
Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) required as a condition of employment. As long as a successful candidate has completed the Engineer in Training (EIT) process, the candidate must pass the professional licensing (PE) exam within one year.
Incumbent will be expected to make site visits. If driving a State vehicle, incumbent must possess a valid MD Class C driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than six (6) points.

The hiring range for this position is $102,800-$128,500.
