The Department of Global Health was established in 2007, bridging the schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise and interdisciplinary power of all UW schools and colleges. The University of Washington International Clinical Research Center (ICRC) was established within the Department of Global Health in 2007. The Center currently has nineteen productive faculty members, approximately 35 highly competent staff who specialize in study operations, regulatory affairs, data management and analysis, and specimen repository operations. The overarching goals of the ICRC are to: 1) Conduct clinical research on HIV and other infectious diseases of public health significance, 2) Evaluate interventions to reduce the burden of disease, 3) Conduct observational analyses and translational research on pathogenesis and new intervention targets, and 4) Mentor graduate students and international collaborators in clinical research.

The International Clinical Research Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Programmer (Research Consultant) to join our team.

Collaborating with clinicians, epidemiologists, and stakeholders, we develop dynamic transmission models of HIV and other infectious diseases to evaluate public health interventions, identify critical knowledge gaps, and support public health decision-making. We seek an experienced programmer to maintain and optimize existing models. Working with graduate students and principal investigators, the programmer will also participate in all stages of model development, including incorporating real world/clinical trial data into model parameters, calibration, and analyses. Additional opportunities for global fieldwork, publications, conference attendance, and exposure to global public health are available.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The position will coordinate and provide data management programming and reports, statistical summaries and analyses for research studies, to support study operations, scientific grants and publications. It may include providing technical and organizational leadership to project staff.
The position will work with graduate students and researchers to:
• Review model designs and specifications. The HIV-HPV model is programmed in Matlab and fully described in a technical appendix.
• Perform model diagnostics and resolve coding or software issues. The Programmer will review the proposed approach with the PI and edit the code accordingly.
• Modify and implement changes to the models according to research needs. PI will request changes to the model design and provide support to the Programmer in where and how the code can be changed. As familiarity with the model code grows, the programmer will also initiate changes to the model. All decisions will be made collaboratively on the team.
• Optimize calibration processes and model features.
• Identify model improvements. The PI will work with the programmer to update the model to reflect the most recent research findings. They will evaluate the impact of changes to ensure that the model results continue to be valid.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering and at least two years of relevant experience with dynamic mathematical models. Proficiency with Matlab, experience working in high performance computing environments, and the ability to work collaboratively in teams are also required

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• Background in global health and infectious diseases is a plus but not required. Experience with individual-based modeling or C++ is also a plus.
