ROLE of the POSITION

The UNLV Boyd School of Law has established a comprehensive program on Native American gaming law and governance. The Program leads national discussions around tribal gaming, governance, and economic development, and examines legal, historical, cultural, and ethnographic dynamics that continue to pose challenging political questions to tribal communities.

The Law School seeks a Program Director as a non-tenure-track faculty member to lead research and programming in tribal gaming and governance. The successful applicant will be hired at the assistant, associate, or full professor-in-residence level depending on experience and could come from academia, the private sector, public/government, or the nonprofit sector.

The Program Director is expected to develop new programming and research ideas relating to Indian gaming, gaming law, federal Indian law, and/or tribal governance. To drive local, regional, and national discourse around tribal gaming, the Program Director will be responsible for:

  • Organizing workshops and symposia on issues in gaming law and policy, tribal governance, and federal Indian and gaming law.
  • Identifying areas of research for the Program and ensuring the completion of research.
  • Supervising the development of online modules specifically geared toward tribal gaming.
  • Recruiting visiting faculty and fellows in Indian gaming, tribal governance, and Indian law.
  • Coordinating with law school and university departments to ensure smooth administration of the program.
  • Developing relationships with tribal communities in Nevada and nationally.
  • Participating in regional and national tribal gaming conferences and activities and staying up to date on current trends and opportunities in the area.
  • Assisting faculty with existing tribal law courses, such as Indian Gaming Law, Tribal Law & Governance, and Federal Indian Law, by hosting guest lectures during or outside of class time or bringing in specialists to discuss targeted issues in the field.
  • Assisting the Administration in developing strategies to recruit and retain Native students, including overseeing scholarship selection.
  • Ensuring that the Program is in compliance with university and grant requirements.
  • Facilitating and leading communications with grant funders.
  • Potentially teaching a course, subject to the Law School's curricular needs and Program workload.

Additionally, the Program Director will supervise a Program Coordinator who manages the day-to-day Program activity.

The William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV is a leading public law school founded on a commitment to public service and community engagement. The law school is located at the heart of the UNLV campus. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a J.D. degree, preferably from an ABA-accredited law school.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have a J.D., preferably from an ABA-accredited law school, significant academic or professional experience in tribal gaming law, experience working with tribal communities, and a record of strong academic and/or professional performance. Other preferred qualifications include: excellent project management skills, strong organizational skills with attention to detail, the ability to carry out responsibilities with a minimum of supervision, excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong service commitment.

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
