Process Piping Mechanical Engineer


Position Summary

Purpose:

The FRIB Process Piping Mechanical Engineer will be the technical expert for FRIB process piping systems and the system owner for this equipment. These systems include high pressure (300 psi) and hazardous substances. Key objectives for this engineer include establishing programs to evaluate proposed process piping system designs and system modifications, to operate existing process pipe systems safely and reliably, and to establish a Laboratory capability in the quantitative modeling of piping systems.

Scope:

The Process Piping Mechanical Engineer will work under the Chief Engineer and perform engineering functions for the Laboratory.

Major Position Responsibilities:

  • Process Piping Design Program: 30%

    • Lead FRIB process piping systems design development, coordinating with other internal and external team members
    • Analyze proposed design solutions to assess suitability to meet functional requirements
    • Review proposed design solutions against code requirements and evaluate proposed modifications for overall system suitability and impact
  • Process Piping Operations Program: 30%

    • Manage existing piping system configuration and associated design basis documentation
    • Assess extant piping systems, evaluate of quantitatively and qualitatively for safety, suitability and code compliance
    • Provide recommendations and plans for reliability improvements
  • Quantitative Modeling Program: 20%

    • Develop and implement a quantitative process piping modeling capability within the Laboratory
    • Integrate program with existing CAD/analysis tools and develop training program
  • Interpret ASME code with respect to high-pressure piping systems: 20%

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Five to eight years of related technical design and operating engineering experience in piping systems, background in HVAC and special systems a plus
  • Successful background leading mechanical engineering scope of projects and managing projects from conception through completion
  • Strong knowledge of piping design, codes and standards
  • Experience working with (advanced level knowledge) computer operations for engineering design programs and computer aided drafting (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Michigan or the ability to attain within one year

  • Minimum 9 years of related technical design and operating engineering experience in piping systems
